It’s Leukodystrophy Awareness Month which is bringing awareness for all disorders that have demyelination as a symptom. I posted this on TikTok and watched it go viral awhile back and was able to raise awareness for treatments that we have found to be successful with Augustine. For Mitchell Syndrome specifically (episodic demyelination) we believe he is being treated with Riboflavin and his body is repairing with the Wahls Protocol. Only time will tell as our research is being conducted now but I share this information because it’s important to Leukodystrophy. I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Wahls and she has essentially put her own MS in remission with this method. When being used to treat other disorders she said she hears countless stories like mine of children being helped either by slowing the progression or improving. For Augustine he is drastically improving and is just about to walk. We’re thankful to have the information shared with us and hope it can be helpful for others. As always I am not a doctor and am not giving medical advice or dosing suggestions. Reading the book and consulting your doctor is the best suggestion I can give. #leukodystrophy #demyelination #leukodystrophyawareness #leukodystrophyawarenessmonth #raredisease #rarediseaseawareness #careaboutrare #mitchellsyndrome #acox1gainoffunction #deafkidsrock #hearinglossawareness #opticatrophy

The moss turns green in the rain because that is when it can do photosynthesis. When the sun is shining and it’s dry, the moss becomes dormant. It turns gray and disappears into the bark. Our microbiome will thrive when we eat vegetables and avoid added sugars and processed foods. If instead wheat a lot of fast food, processed food, and drink, sugar sweetened beverages our microbiome will struggle. Will be more likely to have fatigue, anxiety, depression, brain fog, and more likely to develop problems with blood sugar and blood pressure the bacteria in our gut are like the moss on this tree. if they are not fed the correct foods, they will go dormant. The health promoting bacteria will go dormant. The disease promoting bacteria will increase our health will decline so how are you feeding your gut bacteria?

This is the same tree truck that had the green moss when it was raining. Now when the sun is shining, and there is no rain the moss is dormant. A micro biome is the same when we eat a lot of processed foods our micro biome will become dormant. The good health Pori bacteria are not getting the foods. They need to thrive. Were more likely to have difficulty with mood with pain, with fatigue, with poor mental clarity. What are you choosing to feed your micro biome please share.

One of my favorite wintertime activities is taking a new infrared sauna. I read a book during the sauna. And then I go out for a roll in the snow. This is a wonderful hormetic stress. It boost the efficiency of my mitochondria. It helps calm my nervous system. It helps calm my nervous system. I like doing a morning workout. It might be strength training. It might be vibration plate training. It might be a swim. It might be a jog in my treadmill, or it may simply be training and juggling my suggestion for you to begin gradually increasing the temperature that you can function well in. Don’t do so much heat or cold that you develop symptoms just begin very slowly very gently. Perhaps with a little cold at the end of your shower or a warm shower or a warm bath or a cold bath. Or a walk outside in hot weather a short walk. A short walk outside and cold weather , encourage you to begin. Let me know how it goes.

Today I turned 69. I’ve had plenty of failures in my personal life and my work life. Plenty of fear and despair in my heart, but I also had love from my dear Jackie and my two young children. My mantra was my children are watching. I needed to model that they’re always choices. I can make that will make my life a little bit better. It is a steady downhill slides. It is my mind that determines if I have joy or gratitude. However, disappointed you are in your current circumstances remember that we have choices, we can learn. We can adapt. We can continue our struggle towards a more perfect life for ourselves, and our community may have despair and fear in your heart. Keep making choices to fight for the life that you seek for yourself and your community there will always be reasons to have gratitude For what is right in your life. For the people you love and who love you. For the children and the grandchildren in your life, the heroes journey. Yes there is a great struggle and your tribe is struggling. What do you need to learn to help you and your tribe? Be more successful And then come back and use what you learned to make your life better. To make the life of your tribe better that is the journey. That will inspire your children and your grandchildren and the tribe all around you as I struggle in life I knew that recovery was not possible. But I did all that I could because I wanted to inspire my children to do all that they could and they feel despair and fear and their lives are difficult. How can you reinvent your life? How can you reimagine your heroes journey. Yes despair and fear and failure will come, and for me that is when I learn the most likely for you disappointment and failure may well be when you learn the most please share how you are facing your disappointments and how you are reimagining what you doing to make your life a little bit better the life of your tribe a little bit betterto make the future for your children and your grandchildren never give up on your agency mind is the most powerful tool we have

Super exciting. Tomorrow I will turn 69. when I was 52 I could not sit up I could take a few steps with two walking sticks. I was dependent on a tilt/recline wheelchair. I had frequent episodes horrific pain due to trigeminal neuralgia. It was clear I was on track to become bedridden by illness, demented by my illness illness and likely die with intractable pain. And now things are remarkably better my fatigue is gone. I am mentally clear. I’m getting steadily stronger. I can lift weights. I do push-ups. I do jump in jocks. I do strength training. I swim. I hike. I bike. I can even jog 20 minutes When I was 52 my biological age was 65 now on the verge of turning 69 my biologic age is 56. The keys to becoming well are our daily choices. Are you going outside getting sunshine and fresh air. Are you cooking meals using recipes, are you eating with family and friends? Do you have a religious community? Do you have a close network of friends? Do you have children or grandchildren? Do you have other children in your lives? Are you choosing to eat non-starchy vegetables and berries are you choosing to eat a lot of process foods and fast food, are you drinking sugar sweetened beverages are you drinking artificially sweetened beverages do you read food labels, and avoid food like chemicals? These are the things that increase the probability of greater health and vitality. These things can increase the risk of frailty and poor health at all depends on the choices you makebit by bit the shift your choices. Bit by bit we can move in the direction of greater health and greater vitality. I invite you to begin bit by bit. Please share how you are shifting your daily choices towards health.

These are our carrots. They filled with a variety of carotenoids. There are red carrots, yellow carrots, black carrots, and orange carrots. All those colors have different affects in our cells. we don’t eat enough purple blue black pigments. This is why I love planting the dark black carrots the super good for us. And after hard frost the carrots who even sweeter.

The main drivers of poor health and disease are our diet, our inactivity, our relationship relationships with friends and family, how much time we spend outside, how much time we spend scrolling social media, and other self-care. Changing how you eat is quite profound changing your daily routine is quite profound, begin step-by-step. Improving your diet. Reduce the sugar, sweet and beverages. Reduce reduce the process foods learn to cook a few simple meals at home and that will begin your journey towards better health supplements can be helpful things like vitamin D multivitamin, multi mineral and fish oil. Two of our undergraduate students in the Wahls laboratory presented their research at the fall undergraduate research festival at the university of Iowa. I love training new students and getting them excited about nutrition. Health.

Did you know? Vitamins and minerals are team players! These nutrients work as cofactors, meaning they help activate and enhance each other’s benefits in our bodies. But here’s the catch: Even with the healthiest diet, sometimes our biochemistry needs a little extra support. That’s where targeted supplements come in! When key nutrients are low, bioavailability can be compromised, and your body might not get the full advantage of essential vitamins and minerals. Balanced Support: Targeted supplements fill the gaps in our diet, ensuring optimal nutrient synergy. Better Together: For example, calcium needs magnesium, and vitamin D is best with vitamin K2 to maximize their effects. Investing in quality supplements may be the missing piece in achieving true balance and vitality. I have carefully curated a small line of Wahls Protocol® supplements that those with Multiple Sclerosis, autoimmune or chronic conditions will find helpful in their healing journey.
