I’m definitely not a parenting expert! Monty loves working, so on school holidays, he comes to work, does deliveries, or works with the packing team, etc. He would leave school tomorrow if he could. I was very much the same—school is for some kids and not for others, but unfortunately, more often than not, it is designed for a limited style of learning. For those kids who don’t fit into the conventional way of learning, they get deemed as bad kids, disruptive kids, or even sometimes thick with no prospects. I see it completely differently; I see those kids as the interesting ones, the ones with a unique talent that needs to be found and nurtured to create specialists. With the way the future is looking with AI, those old ways are very much coming to an end. Let’s be honest; success is in the specialists. If you are good at everything but don’t specialize in anything, then you will be Joe Average. There is nothing wrong with joe average but it’s nothing to celebrate but at school it’s is. So, if you have a kid who is struggling at school, don’t worry—just love and support them and encourage them to follow their dreams, not yours. We used to build ramps on the streets of Redcar in the ’80s with some wood from a garage and house bricks we found. We would then encourage the local kids to lie down so we could jump over them. @timhood1 can verify this story. I don’t remember anyone getting too hurt—except me, when I landed on the crossbar and managed to fire one of my bollocks into my stomach, which had to be surgically reattached. Anyway, Monty got some ramps for Christmas, so after 34 years of retirement, 80kg heavier—and with my balls no longer needed—I thought it would be fun to see if I’ve still got it.
