I teach so many of the Pilates exercises with a rhythm. I strongly believe it helps my students connect to the movement and concentrate on control. It also helps them work off of each other as a class. That’s the way I conduct my classes. I’m the conductor and my students are the instruments. 😊 In this video my students are working on Tendon Stretch with two variations.👇🏻 ▫️Gymnast ▫️Single Leg to the side Have a wonderful weekend🤍 Sound on🎧 • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • #pilatesinstructors #pilatesinstructortraining #pilatesteachers #pilatesexercises #josephpilates #josephpilatesmethod #pilateslove #pilatesworkshop #pilatesclass #pilatesfordancers #pilatesforathletes #pilatesformen #pilatesforeverybody #fit #fitness #getfit #healthandwellness #healthandfitness #healthy #dance #balletteachers #balletinspiration #lovewhatyoudo #lovemyjob 🤍

Pilates has been part of my life for along time. In fact I took my first Pilates class in NYC when I was 14. It was a big part of my Ballet training. I continued to study Pilates in College and throughout my professional career as a dancer. It was just a way of life and I never even thought about Classical or contemporary I just went to class. As a dancer I only trained in classical Ballet. I never stepped foot into a Jazz or Tap class until I was in my early twenties. But because of my classical Ballet training it was easy. But I have to say the only thing hard about contemporary dance was picking up the style. But after a while picking up different styles of dance soon became natural to me because of my classical training. I became very versatile and went on to a long career in Theatre. And I toured the world as a choreographer and dance teacher before I taught Pilates. I’m a true believer of classical methods whether it be Classical Ballet or Classical Pilates. Classical methods are our foundations. You gotta know the terms and have that solid technique. One of my Pilates heroes was Romana Kryzanowska. She was a dancer at the School of American Ballet. She stayed true to Joe’s work but because of her dance background, that ballet flair her own personal style couldn’t help from showing up into her Pilates teaching styles. Every teacher is different. A good teacher teaches from within and not by a script. Just remember it’s ok to go out of the box and have your own style. I have my style and I feel comfortable with it. And I’m very lucky to have so many students who are interested in my style. I absolutely love sharing my work and teaching Pilates. Just learn your foundation and apply your six Pilates principles to every exercise. Learning how to transition from one exercise to the next gracefully can take time with a lot of practice. Transitions are what make the series, they’re just as important as the exercise. Once you’ve mastered all the exercises with transitions it becomes a mini performance. With a beginning, middle and end. In this video my class is practicing The Long Box Series. You’ll see the transition from Pulling Straps (one of my variations) to Backstroke and then Backstroke to Teaser up to take off a spring for Teaser. Is this video perfect❔Absolutely not❕ WORK IN PROGRESS☑️ Have a great Tuesday🤍 Sound On🎧 • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • #pilates #pilatesteachers #pilatesinstructors #pilatesclass #pilatesworkshop #pilatesexercises #pilatesfordancers #pilateslove #pilatesforeverybody #josephpilates #exercise #fit #fitnesslife #fitness #healthandfitness #healthandwellness #healthylifestyle #classical #balletteachers #dance #workinprogress #practicemakesperfect #lovemyjob 🤍

I have to be honest…Stomach Massage was never a favorite of mine to perform. But I love teaching this series so much❗️ I love the choreography, the progressions and all the great movements it does for our bodies. It’s another brilliant series that Joe Pilates created with a beginning, middle and of course the end. Meaning the mounting the carriage from the floor, the four exercises we perform and the stretch at the end. ALL THE GOOD STUFF👇🏻 ▫️Strengthens abdominals ▫️Improves flexibility In not only the spine but the whole body. ▫️Improves digestion ▫️Coordination ▫️And rumor has it👉🏻It massages our internal organs😊 In this video I’m teaching my advanced class from the top of the exercise to the end. On this Reformer I’m using 2 red springs and one yellow in all four exercises. Don’t forget a small sticky pad so that you can gauge the distance from the front of the bed. The distance will also depend on your height, mobility and flexibility. What’s your favorite apparatus? Most people would say the Reformer. And don’t get me wrong I love the Reformer too. In fact I love all of the Pilates apparatus. But when my body is craving a good stretch there’s nothing like the Ladder Barrel to the rescue🩷 NO SPRINGS ATTACHED😊 So…what’s your favorite and why? The best way I can describe the Short Box Series is that it moves your spine in all the directions it’s suppose to move👇🏻 ▫️Round Back ▫️Flat Back ▫️Side to Side ▫️Twist (Rotation) ▫️And let’s not forget Spear a Fish In the video is a demonstration from the beginning to the end. Well almost to the end. The finale would be Side Bends. The setup is an important one👇🏻 ▫️Short Box Center the box in line with the shoulder blocks. I usually have my students put the little black strap between the blocks. ▫️Dowel placed on the box to use after Round Backs. ▫️All springs attached ▫️Five fingers away from the back of the box. ▫️Both feet in the safety strap and flexed. Now you’re ready to move🩵 Sound on🎧 • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • #pilates #pilatesteachers #pilatesinstructors #pilatestraining #pilatesworkshop #pilatescommunity #josephpilates #lovepilates #fit #fitness #fitnessmotivation #balletinspiration #balletteachers #balletdance #dance #healthylifestyle #healthandfitness #healthandwellness #lovemyjob🩵

The Rowing Series is a classical series that has 6 exercises. That technically means you have 6 transitions. And if you want to get really technical 8 transitions if you count the beginning and the end. Remember the transitions are just as important as the exercise. It’s very important to me as a teacher for my students to learn and perform all the transitions. Important for me to teach then how to gracefully move from one exercise to the next. I always tell them I want them to look professional. I call them professional Pilates students😊 I love teaching the Rowing Series because it has so many traditions involving every part of your body from head to toe and in many different directions. All the transitions in this series is very well choreographed. BRAVO TO JOE👏🏻👏🏻 In this video👆🏻you’re watching my 1.5 class @pilatesinthegrove practice 3 transitions. Rowing 2 to 3, 3 to 4 and 4 to Shave. Welcome to Monday’s advanced class👆🏻 Today we worked on a Single Leg Tendon Stretch. In my opinion this front variation prepares us for single leg side and single leg from arabesque. We’ve have been practicing all three together with transitions which I’ll share another day. The single leg front helps my students practice the transfer of weight from side to side. It also improves balance, hip stability and coordination before moving on to the more difficult variations. And my students feel secure and confident with this variation because they push out with both legs to lift (Battement) and pull in with both legs to close. I also believe this variation helps them practice feeling the upper back arm connection as well as gaining strength and control with those deep core muscles. I’m using one red and one yellow spring. You can definitely use a blue instead of a yellow but just remember it’s harder to push out. And if you use just a red spring it will be harder to pull in. So the red and yellow for me is perfect. Have a good Tuesday🩵 Sound on🎧 • • • • • • • • • • • • • • #pilates #pilatesexercises #pilatesteachers #pilatesinstructors #pilateseveryday #pilatesworkshop #pilatesformen #pilatesfordancers #pilateslove #josephpilates #fit #fitnes #healthandfitness #healthandwellness #balletinspiration #balletteachers #balletdancer #dance #lovewhatyoudo #lovemyjob 🩵

They say it’s a beginner exercise but the Elephant is more complicated than it looks. The support of the upper body combined with the movement of the lower body can actually be hard to understand. The gliding with the hips back and pulling in with the abdominals can also be confusing for some. And it does require strength, control and complete body awareness. Elephant is usually taught with two straight legs, heels against the shoulder blocks and of course the toes lifted. Again like every Pilates exercise it’s very technical and our body works as a team. In this video I’m using one of my teachers in training @natashagilbert5638 to demonstrate two variations using a single leg. I’m starting out of the box with her feet together positioned away from the shoulder blocks. That way when she transitions to the parallel arabesque it’s a clean straight line back.
