Summer is well and truly here in Cornwall - the thrift is now mostly dry and dusty, and the grasses are growing long. Whilst I’m a self confessed thrift freak, a little part of me mourns the all-too-quick passing of these candy-floss blooms, but there are an abundance of other wildflowers lined up in the wings to flood in and beautify and soften the cliff faces, hedgerows and verges. Happy Summer Solstice from Cornwall! Today, we will see the longest period of sunlight, and the sun will appear at its highest in the sky - day will be almost equal in length to night, as the sun crosses the celestial equator and moves southward into the northern hemisphere. Although there is much to celebrate about the summer solstice, it also marks the time the sun stops moving northward in the sky, and the days will become steadily shorter until we reach the Winter Solstice at which point days will start to lengthen out again….. Coast path views - every step along the way on the @southwestcoastpath you’re treated to beautiful views, and tantalising glimpses of the path ahead as it winds its way along the coast ahead, up and down headland, in and out if coves and inlets. This just makes me want to walk and walk, and find out what’s around the next corner - even if I’ve walked that same path many times before. It’s forever changing, and never looks quite the same as it had the last time courtesy of changing seasons, tides, weather and hour of day! Pictured is the path as it approaches Port Quin on the north coast of Cornwall, the hedges still lined with bubblegum thrift in sheltered spots, and Doyden Castle just visible atop the smaller mound here. Late autumn days feel so distant now - when the days are still warm, and not yet at their shortest, it’s easy to feel as though summer is still with us, despite the tinder-dry remnants of the blooms of spring. Each year, it feels a little sad to see the wildflowers go over, but we still have their dried forms fluttering on the breeze for a while yet - an echo of what was. Come February, and the landscape is void of even the dried whispers of the previous years’ flowers. So we wait for the blooms of spring, eager for their colour, their softness against the harshness of winter, and their signal that life is beginning again. There is little that a walk by the sea cannot fix for me - and an estuary view illuminated by a dazzling sun whilst seabirds dive and swoop was just what I needed today! I’ve been struck down by the lurgy this past week, and as someone who rarely gets ill, I make a terrible sick person! Last weekend was spent sleeping, in and out of feverish coughing fits. Monday, I was too sick to go to work (this is unheard of!), and for the rest of this week I have just been trying to gain back some strength and stop the confounded coughing! So, the 6km walk from Rock to New Polzeath today was just the kind of boost I needed - brilliant sunshine, gently lapping sea, and friendly faces along the coastpath have restored me a little and I feel ready for another busy week ahead. In other news, Instagram is being a dick again and engagement seems to have plummeted along with my health! It’s also distorting images, which is a little confusing!
