He questions why Jesus, Adam, Eve, saints, and angels are always depicted as white, while the devil is black. He calls out the erasure of African spirituality in favor of foreign religions that came with colonization. The message was so powerful that it shook the Catholic Church. The Vatican reportedly stepped in, instructing bishops in Congo to suppress the song. Religious leaders condemned it, and efforts were made to ban it. But the people embraced it. Despite the pushback, the song became a rallying cry, forcing a deeper conversation about identity, history, and the narratives shaping Black consciousness. Verckys didn’t just make music—he sparked a movement.
