Yoga isn’t just about the physical body, but while we practice asana and use our physical body as a vehicle for self inquiry, we may as well do it in a way that is safe, sustainable and informed by contemporary understanding of the body. If you want to connect to something deeper than yourself, remember one of the most tangible parts of the universe we have access to, is our bodies.

Tried one yoga class and it was… too hippy … too much like a dance class …. not spiritual enough… was too fast .. or the teacher had an annoying yoga voice? We’ll go back! Not necessarily to that class, but try other styles, other teachers, other studios. Even if you go to a class with the same name, many styles are relatively not pescriptive.. you might, for instance, get a vastly different experience from one vinyasa yoga class to the next. Share this with people that need to give yoga another go! Catch me this weekend headlining @theyogapicnic Ireland . I’ve met people that can do cool handstands that are deeply unhappy, unkind human beings. I’ve met people that can do cool handstands that are the nicest humans I’ve ever met. If asana is your yoga path, you may well be able to do cool looking poses at some point on that path. But perhaps treat these kinds of poses, not as a goal, but as a byproduct of finding calmness & equanimity during subjective challenge. There will be plenty of people that can do some of these ‘cool’ poses without any yoga experience (gymnasts etc). My feeling is, that initially they do the ‘shape’ but as time goes by and they explore, they begin to eventually practice the ‘yoga asana’. If your fancy exploring asana beyond shape, out 200hr @triyogauk teacher training commences March with the next one being in fall/autumn. If you’re already a teacher and want ongoing education without taking part in a training then I have an online teachers class each week + recording on @honestlyunbalanced online studio. #yogaasana #advancedyoga #handstands #yogateachertraining #yogalondon

Of course, if you’re doing a contortion practice then the intention, the techniques and the who ‘why’ you’re doing it would be entirely different. My asana ‘why’ is that I’m using the physical body as a vehicle for self inquiry, and while I’m doing that improving strength, flexibility, stability and mobility as much as I can, as a welcome by product… the ‘shape’ isn’t the goals. Fancy exploring deeper with me each week? Next week my online teachers’ practice launches. For just £6 a week you can get 3 live online classes per week + recording … and access to a huge catalogue of yoga classes, mediations and sound healings! DEAL. Get all the details via my link in bid and get practicing straight away! #yogaasana #backbend #yogateachers #yogateachertraining #yogaanatomy #dropbacks

I’m not saying you shouldn’t demo…. I’m saying be intentional about it. Think about how often you demo, weigh the pros and cons, and if you decide it’s the right tool for the moment, do it with purpose and clarity. What have I missed? Next 200hr training at triyoga London begins March 12th 2025 in Camden. #yogateacher #yogateachingskill #yogateachers #asana #yogalondon

I don’t take people on retreats to help them escape their lives… I take them on retreats, to remarkable locations, so they they can remind themselves how they want to live each day and interact with the world. As it stands Norway and The Lake District are where the self-inquiry is happening this year. All the details via my bio. See you there? #yogaretreat #retreatyourself #reclaimyourselfretreats #norwayretreat #lakedistrictretreat

Navigating the “Can You Work for Free?” Conversation (Without the Awkwardness) That ‘oh’ moment when someone casually suggests you teach a class or offer your expertise… in exchange for good vibes, a yoga balm, or a bottle of CBD. It’s tricky because, as yoga teachers, we’re often passionate about sharing our knowledge, but there no passion if we can’t pay the rent. So, how do you handle these conversations gracefully—without feeling undervalued or burning bridges? 1. Set Boundaries with Confidence (and Kindness) It’s okay to say no, and you don’t need a long-winded explanation. Try: “I really appreciate the offer! Right now, I’m focusing on paid work to sustain my teaching, but I’d love to collaborate in a way that works for both of us.” This keeps the tone professional yet warm, making it clear you value your time. 2. Recognize When “Free” Might Be Worth It There are situations where unpaid work can be strategic: • Charity or community work that aligns with your values. • Genuinely valuable exposure (think: teaching at a high-profile launch event). • A learning opportunity that enhances your skills or credibility. If it’s something you’d willingly pay to be part of, it might be worth considering. Otherwise, politely decline. 3. Shift the Focus to a Paid Opportunity If you sense that someone wants to pay but isn’t sure how to approach it, guide them: • “If you’re looking for a one-off class or event, I’d love to explore options that fit your budget.” … Cohort 5 of my “Level-Up” Mentoring Programme for Yoga Teachers will launch in the coming weeks. Will yoga 100% quieten the mind? Will it give you unbreakable inner peace? Will it allow you to respond to everything that happens in a loving kind way? No, no and no. But just because we will never get there, doesn’t mean we can’t try to move in that direction and increase the frequency in which we can realise; an occasionally quieter mind, calmer being and more loving interaction with the world. That’s the practice! But when I do realise I’m reacting or acting I a way that doesn’t align with the person I want to be, I don’t just indulge it. I acknowledge it, reflect and come back to the work. Thank you to yoga for almost 20 years of this yoga-informed self work! #yogapeace #realyoga #yogacalm #yogateacher

Are we compulsive liars? Terrible at counting? Or just easily distracted beings?? Maybe it’s time we start being honest and admit: we’re holding plank for “somewhere between one second and eternity.” That feels about right, doesn’t it? Or do avoid being dishonest, maybe don’t mention length of time at all? Everything is held indefinitely … See you on the mat online or in person somewhere soon! #yogateacher #pilatesteacher #yogadudes #realyoga #honestyoga
