So many of us were raised on a diet of shame and punishment. In order to preserve attachment with our caregivers we were forced to hide our sadness and anger as part of self-preservation. When we say "mean" it's because when we set limits with our children this is sometimes EXACTLY what they call us 😉 Just because a child doesn’t want to eat their veggies, doesn’t mean we should let them eat whatever they want. There are so many different types of intelligence: Logical-mathematical intelligence, linguistic, spatial, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, intrapersonal, interpersonal, and naturalistic. Many educational settings in this world only value logical-mathematical or linguistic—we have such brilliant and gifted children who inherently believe something is wrong with them because they do not conform to this limited model. We often miss the need behind the behavior. Children aren’t always good at expressing what is truly going on underneath the surface as much of this is unconscious. It translates to reactions, tantrums, tears, demands, or stubbornness.
