Oh what a night! Late March in 2025. Out here at @maropengsa the Cradle of Humankind, celebrating the 10th edition of the #hssawards2025 We are doing it loud, with pride, celebrating achievements in the humanities and social sciences field! Without the vision of Dr Sarah Mosoetsa, these awards would not have been a reality. Such profound observations and commentary from Prof Ari Sitas and Ms Auriel Neimack. #awardwinning #accolades #humanities #socialsciences #hss2025 #celebratingartsexcellence #celebratingliteraryexcellence #celebratingcreativity

So I spent Valentines Day weekend in the company of this book titled #Broken by @aka.fatima.bala. To say I was engrossed is an understatement. I was blown away and gobbled up the 371 pages in 3 days!! For reasons known to myself, I haven't touched a romance novel in 3 decades. So here I was, reading this Halal not so Halal love story. So I am gasping because I am on page 84 and our hero and heroine, Fa'iza and Ahmed still haven't quite locked lips. Yet this is precisely what I loved about it. Kinda reminded me how sensual holding hands can be and the delayed gratification of waiting. There is beauty (and wisdom) in the waiting and this is beautifully portrayed. The story moves between Nigeria and Canada. We are introduced to two wealthy Nigerian families: the Babangidas and the Mohammads. Seemingly it appears like we have a match made in heaven but as the story unfolds, all hell breaks loose. Now this is not the drama that you are all used to, rooted in cheatin' and beatin'. So the conflict here lies in the purity culture and the religion which is what makes this story special. It's not the usual run of the mill black love story where a woman is jumping through hoops to earn love and affection. Nah fam, the love was served generously. It was a considerate, thoughtful, deliberate and intentional. It is a contemporary love story which spotlights Hausa culture and Islamic religion beautifully. The soundtrack is modern and upbeat with Tamia, Rihanna, Miguel and Burna Boy. Not only will you be entertained but you will also get educated on the tenets of Islam which is intrinsically weaved into the story and forms a nail biting plot twist which keeps you on your toes till the very end. So I admit I am new to this genre of 'halal love stories' but I am totally sold. Whether you are Christian or Muslim, neither or other, the message is clear. We are all called to obedience and good things certainly come to those who wait, so wait on Him. "The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him."
