Dan Santat

After a year of its release I’ve spoken with many folks who have read A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING and realized that many of you have missed the QR code on the dedication page which happens to be my most favorite part of the book! If you scan the code it will take you to some cool things. First, if you’re curious to know what songs were on the mixed tape that Lisa and Sofia gave me I posted the entire playlist onto Spotify for you to enjoy. Second, if you’re curious to know what some of the kids from the trip are like now I posted interviews with Shelly, Joy, Darryl, and Amy onto YouTube for you all to see while I was on tour in 2023. Hope you all consider going back and enjoy the extras! I really do think it’ll add another layer to the book🙏❤️

Oh, what a night! My wife @lsantat looked dazzling in her dress, I wore my old Wimbledon shirt under my tuxedo for good luck, took a “selfie” with Oprah, and saw a few old friends. If you told 13 year old Dan that his most humiliating childhood moments would become a National Book Award winner he would have thought you to be insane, but that’s the funny thing about life. You experience certain highs and lows and sometimes those experiences are completely out of your control, but if you take a moment to pause, and reflect on the positives of those moments, you will realize that you will come out of it a much stronger person. If I did not die of embarrassment in front of my entire junior high then I wouldn’t have gone to Europe, or become a writer, or have those memories to tell this story. In the end the highs and lows are what make you who you are and I wouldn’t change a thing ❤️

It’s been years since I’ve done this but if there’s one thing I think everyone should try at least once in their lives it would be to draw your own self portrait from life. You’ll appreciate every wrinkle, every blemish, and every little contour on your face and realize how unique you truly are ❤️
