The recipe for the beginning of a great night? Just pick a mature bottle of @champagne_billecart_salmon Louis Salmon blanc de blancs. This 1988, an amazing vintage in Champagne, is firing on all cylinders. I was lucky to taste it at Billecart house, and it was of course wonderful. This bottle (actually it was 2, at different times of the year) showed slightly more advanced, which is completely normal as it has moved, but was certainly stored in excellent conditions. The wine still shows insane energy. Bright acidity and fatty texture. The complexity on the nose is splendid. Grilled bread, toast, butter, ripe yellow fruits, smoke, honey… this is truly impressive. Layered with impressive depth. The text book definition, once again, of aging potential in Champagne. The last red of our 2023 Christmas tasting. Still super late, I know. But better mix up different reviews and different tasting moments, or this page gets super boring, even for me. @arthur_coillard pulled out this beauty. Clear red robe, bright and a little cloudy. Minty on the nose. Open with big fruit, precise and juicy. It smells slightly natural. Flowers and dried roses. Still young and fresh. The palate confirms this statement and shows a rather high level of energy. Quite dark with more black fruits. Salivating with good acidity. More baked berries and cocoa. The wine is layered and deep, but still needs more time to further open and develop additional complexity. With additional air, the wine gets more peppery and spicy. Big wine but promising vintage, too young for this kind of Grand Cru. Unless this was a fake bottle, no one would believe it (except true Bordeaux aficionados)! A great wine to celebrate my mother’s birthday (birth vintage of course). Tasted with several friends too, including my big boy @choischoices. Blind guesses went for a much younger wine. What we had in the glass was still full of life. Very impressive to see so much fruit and vivacity here. Clean and beautifully built. Of course there are some tertiary notes (tobacco, cigar box), but the fruit is still so prominent that it is impossible to guess the juice was in there for almost 60 years. Silky and round, with good concentration. Excellent depth, with a smoky finish. Beautiful, this is why I love Bordeaux. Risky but worth it! Quality pre-wedding drinks. Lucky to drink some great bottles before @letellieroctave wedding party. Just landed from South Korea, straight to this amazing rooftop wine tasting. No specific notes, we simply enjoyed the moment. I did not recognize Dureuil-Janthial style this time (maybe pre-2018 wines are a little less reductive), but this was so pure and has great fruit and tension. Still young and bright, a lot of energy. A beautiful day at Domaine Stephan in Côte-Rôtie, organized by @antoineph___. We were lucky to start our yearly wine weekend with the European tasting team there. A beautiful sunny day to walk through the vineyard. Interesting discussions with Jean-Michel, that helped us understand better their philosophy about wine making. These wines are known for being somehow fragile, it can be hit or miss, but when they are in, the fruit is pure fire. We were lucky to taste 2009, 2014, and 2020. This was followed by a great and fun lunch at their new restaurant, Les Gagères. Excellent service and food, with a decent wine list. This was a real UFO. Peter brought this and we tasted it blind. Several guesses went for Northern Rhône with some age, but no one could guess the age. I don’t know much about 1967 vintage in this area, but I’m pretty sure this isn’t a big year. Yet, the wine was showing brilliant! Look at the color…deep red with slightly orange rim. Still full of power and very clean. Super meaty with ripe plum, Asian spices, and tapenade. The wine still has structure and shows well integrated tannins. What a surprise! When Big Ben @bhwines_ is coming to town, some big bottles are necessary. What an insane tasting night (binge tasting, to say the least). I popped up this double magnum of La Chapelle 2005 from Jaboulet. Even with a long opening time, the wine is still very youthful. I don’t have specific notes, but I remember the good fruit core, the density of the wine, and its major freshness. The format doesn’t help for sure, this should be further cellared for at least 10 years before thinking about anything. What to say…we didn’t even finish it, but it made it to the sauce of a beautiful Boeuf Bourguignon, so we can’t really say it was wasted. A super nice pool party last summer with @terravitavinum. It was great to pop up this 2021 vintage of Grandes Rogeries. Still very primary, full on juicy citrus fruits. Super citrusy indeed. Too much of Ulysse Collin is just right. It’s very rare that I “sacrifice” the rare bottles I have in the cellar, but being invited at @hillside_mj was such a privilege that a big bottle was necessary. Les Roises (2015) with 60 months on lees is just another level. Same as always, perfect combination of chalky minerality + fruit precision and light toastiness that is way too seductive. Hay and cereals. The mouthfeel with the light foam and tickling bubbles is just insane. Absolutely loved it. So deep and complex for a young wine. Another night that has gone completely out of control with @bourgogneboys. It’s always worth taking chances though, for this kind of memorable nights. J. wanted to blind us with a first white, so let’s go! Joining forces with @choischoices and @jm_nz_switzerland to find out the right answer. From the first smell in the glass, the wine is so Chablis, and very Raveneau too. It has this seashell minerality and salinity, both on the nose and palate. Despite the vintage, the wine still shows impressive energy and freshness. It has bright fruit with good acidity. I always find them more dull compared to Côte de Beaune whites, but this is just a different expression of Chardonnay. Slightly waxy too. The palate has structure and good viscosity, it’s good to have more fatty touches with richer vintages. It definitely can go further with good cellaring conditions, absolutely no rush here. And I would open this a few hours prior to tasting with no risk. Thanks for sharing this, mate! Léoville Las Cases is a wine we often meet in our blind tastings. And twice in less than a year, two people bring the same Château and we taste it blind! Lucky us, it wasn’t the same vintage… - 1986 LLC: dense red robe, slightly cloudy. The rim is lighter, but doesn’t show much evolution overall. Classic Bordeaux nose. Very fine, full of leather. Slightly green, I was thinking the proportion of Cabernet Franc was higher, and possibly Right Bank. Peppery and fresh. The palate is richer and feels more accomplished. Dense and perfectly integrated. Melted tannins that show voluptuous and fatty. A large array of mature black fruits. More game and leather. A clean bottle that shows very well today, but still not fully ripe! - 1998 LLC. Last time we had this one, it was a mixed experience. Strong reduction, possibly some brets? This bottle is a lot better. Full on red and black fruits with dark chocolate. Fresh. The palate is also well integrated, tannins are round and smooth. Leathery as well. The oak is somehow still present, even if light. Loved the texture, the wine is drinking superb right now. A nice duo.
