Next up...Meet Marlee’s mommy! I am so thankful my illustrator @gintran.art captured her warm smile, rosy cheeks, warm demeanor, and short-textured hair. My mom has a quiet strength and can show her fire when needed. But we’ll keep it nice and sweet for the children’s book series 🤣😂 🤩Remember when I introduced y’all to Marlee’s dad? I told you that he took us to feed the ducks on Saturdays, hence the inspiration for the first book. Well....as a child, I thought he took us out of the house on Saturdays so our mom could get a break. As an adult, I learned that mommies don’t really get breaks. 🙈(That’s another topic of discussion, though 😬😩) Instead, she used that time Saturday to do things around the house without our interference. ❤️My mom was the glue that held everything together. She did homework with us, ensured we had what we needed for school projects, prepared snacks and dinner (my dad’s cooking claim to fame was chili...ONLY chili..LOL), shuttled us around to practices and appointments, etc. She did ALL the things! 💲I am so thankful for my mom and take good care of her now, hence the trip to Italy. In this week’s Math Mondays with Marlee, we’re focusing on ways to engage your young mathematicians while they’re home on fall break. Holiday breaks from school are a perfect opportunity for us to remember that learning starts at home and our families are our first teachers. Here are some other things to consider: 🥚 How many eggs will you use this week. Between breakfast and baking, many people will go through quite a few. Ask your learners to get you the number of eggs needed for a particular dish. 🧦 Is laundry on the menu this week? If so, matching socks is a great activity to help kids learn to build pairs. ⏰ Using a timer is a great way to help children with number sense. You can ask them to monitor the timer and let you know when it’s 10 minutes left, 5 minutes left, and the final minute. Try counting down with the timer to help your mathematician practice counting backward. 🔵🔸🟪 Going on a shape hunt is ALWAYS a good idea! Ask your young mathematicians to find circles, cubes, cylinders, squares, or other shapes in the home. Warning, the results of this activity may surprise you. Feel free to give the kiddos parameters on where they can search 🤣😂 💯 Do you have 100 of anything in your home? Ask your learners about this. This helps them reason about larger numbers. Note: This is a judgement free zone. So if you have lots of shoes, sneakers, etc. it’s ok…. Up next, meet Marlee’s dad (my daddy)!! This may be my favorite character illustration because @gintran.art captured my dad PERFECTLY! I actually cried when I opened the email and looked at the draft. I mean…this is just perfection! 🦆My dad took Lewis and me to feed the ducks every Saturday. This book, the first in the series, honors that experience. ♥️Looking back, it was so amazing to have routines as a child. We would go feed the ducks, go to the Museum of Life and Science, and then eat chicken littles for lunch from KFC. My dad was surprised when I told him about the story. He couldn’t believe that I remembered those experiences. Parents, your kids may not appreciate things now, but know that every experience you cultivate for them takes root in their hearts! It will bear fruit when it’s time. 📚Fun fact…I didn’t tell my parents I was writing this book. I waited until it was done. I then showed them the cover and their character designs. It is such an honor to contribute to our family legacy in this way. ❓What do y’all think? Does he look exactly like my dad or what? Have you ever considered all of the amazing mathematics we do while we’re in the kitchen? In today’s Math Mondays with Marlee, we’re focusing on estimation! We invite you to swipe through this post for a few AMAZING examples!! Here are some other things to consider: 🌟 Sometimes we need an exact number. Other times an estimate will do. We can help children become more flexible with their thinking when we encourage them to estimate. 🌟We should help children think about times when we need an exact number (e.g., flight path coordinates or medication) vs when an estimate will do. 🌟 Estimation overlaps with so many other areas of mathematics including time, fractions, counting, more and less, comparing, etc. 🌟 As you engage your young mathematicians with estimation, be sure to focus on how they are thinking by asking them to explain, by posing “What if?” questions, by asking them to make predictions, etc. 📚 The Marlee the Mathematician book series is all about helping children connect to every day math and honoring their brilliance.
