😱Did you know that newborns sleep A LOT! On average, newborns sleep 14-17 hours a day, but not in long stretches. They sleep in short cycles of 2-4 hours because their small tummies need frequent feeding. Their sleep cycle is different - Newborns spend about 50% of their sleep in REM (active sleep), where they can be noisy, move around, or even seem like they’re waking up. This is normal and important for brain development! Day and night confusion : Newborns don’t have a fully developed circadian rhythm yet, so they can often confuse day and night. Exposure to natural light during the day and a calm, dark environment at night can help them adjust over time. Frequent waking is normal : In the first few months, it’s completely normal for your baby to wake often. This is partly because they’re growing so fast and need to feed regularly. Safe sleep is key : Always put your baby on their back to sleep, on a firm surface, with no loose bedding or soft toys around. Safe sleep reduces the risk of SIDS and helps your baby sleep soundly. Remember: Every baby is different. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure about your newborn’s sleep patterns, you’re not alone! It takes time for your little one to develop a more predictable routine. Save & Share this with your friends Follow @allaboutbirthing for more Note: This content doesn’t replace medical advice . . . 😱Are you an exclusively breastfeeding mom? your breasts are starting to feel less full and you’re suddenly worried? Around 6-12 weeks postpartum it’s very normal for your milk supply to start to regulate, but there’s no need to panic! This means your body has learned exactly what your baby needs and is making just the right amount! Things you might notice- ✓ no frequent engorgement ✓ breasts feeling softer between feeds ✓ no milk leaking ✓ may not feel as intense of a letdown These are all signs your body is getting used to making milk and has adjusted accordingly! Even if your breasts don’t feel full, the chances are pretty good that your baby is still getting what they need. As long as your baby is producing wet diapers (with colourless urine) and is having normal, regular bowel movements, check to make sure that your baby is gaining weight, it’s almost certain that your breastmilk supply is perfectly fine, no matter how your breasts feel like. 😱Did you know expecting a newborn means you need to prepare for the second night syndrome? On the second night, many babies become extra fussy, cluster feed constantly, and want to be held almost all night. This is totally normal and doesn’t mean something is wrong! Why does this happen? Your baby is adjusting to life outside the womb and is using frequent feeding to establish your milk supply and get comfort from you. What to Expect: Cluster feeding: Your baby may want to feed every hour. This helps boost milk supply! Fussiness: Babies can be more unsettled, needing extra comfort from you. Little sleep: It may be a sleepless night for both of you, but it’s temporary. How to Handle It: •Lots of skin-to-skin contact •Frequent breastfeeding to establish supply •Don’t worry, your baby’s behavior is normal! Remember, the second night can be tough, but it’s your baby’s way of adjusting and growing. You’ve got this! 😱Did you know that our bodies do an amazing job of MAKING EXTRA blood while we are pregnant, in anticipation for the blood loss we will experience during delivery. This can be anywhere from an extra 20-50% of blood volume! Average blood loss after a vaginal delivery is 250-500ml, while C-section mamas usually lose about 1000ml. Since doctors anticipate more blood loss during a C-section, they routinely give you extra IV fluid during your surgery! Any amount of blood loss over 1000ml (for both vaginal deliveries and C-sections!) is considered a postpartum hemorrhage!
