A month in and I think the flowers have been my favorite part of settling here. The calla lilies were already growing out front when I moved in, which felt like a small gift from whoever lived here before. Cutting stems and changing water has quietly become part of my week. The backyard roses all opened overnight one day, so I just brought the whole lot in and let the petals fall where they wanted. Found this on Facebook Marketplace for $800, and I’m apparently the 3rd person to give it a home. There‘s something I love about furniture that’s already lived a few lives before landing in yours. Spent an afternoon arranging and rearranging until it felt right — a Matisse print, a little bonsai, the film camera I never actually use but can‘t stop displaying. Home is the most honest thing about a person. When I moved in, I spent a long time thinking about what I wanted this space to say about me. A girl from China, now living in California. I built this Chinese corner slowly: objects carried across the ocean, paintings I made from memory, a blue and white porcelain pot that’s followed me for years. And right beside it is a vintage IKEA Enetri shelf I found secondhand. Two things that shouldn‘t belong in the same corner.
