Tonight we return to Via Bigli 21 in Milan — Palazzo Olivazzi — and the private apartment designed by Osvaldo Borsani between 1947 and 1948, opened to the public for the first time this Fuorisalone. A work of his early career, it arrives nearly eight decades on entirely intact: formally rigorous, meticulously detailed, its original leather and fine wood furnishings still defining every room. For @internoitaliano , Interni Venosta — the independent furniture concept founded by Emiliano Salci and Britt Moran — placed their new collection in quiet dialogue with Borsani’s architecture. Burnished brass, lacquered wood, and champagne-toned seating converse with the original interiors without competing with them. Contemporary objects that amplify rather than intrude. Tonight we tour a rare survivor in the foothills of Mount Lycabettus, Athens — a detached townhouse built across four distinct phases, from a late 19th-century courtyard dwelling through interwar additions in the 1930s to marble staircases and terrazzo floors laid in the 1950s. One of the few such properties in the neighbourhood to have escaped demolition, it stands as a quiet act of architectural defiance. Designer Leda Athanasopoulou of @studiopale restored the entire building into a single residence of her own, preserving every layer of its history with care. Tonight we revisit designer @jasperconran ‘s former apartment at New Wardour Castle, a magnificent Palladian house in Wiltshire designed by James Paine in the 1770s, its centrepiece a 60-foot rotunda of breathtaking proportion. The 23,000-square-foot apartment was refined by John Pawson, whose interventions gave Conran the freedom to combine centuries of antiques with carefully chosen modern pieces — what he came to call a “maximal minimalist” sensibility. This is truly one of my all time favorite English period interiors. The collection assembled here over a lifetime is extraordinary: George II mahogany brackets designed by William Kent for Rousham, Old Master paintings, Persian carpets, Chinese and Japanese ceramics, and a golden chandelier commissioned for Longleat in the early 18th century — alongside sofas by Axel Vervoordt, Paola Navone’s Ghost chairs, and a dining table designed by Sir Terence Conran. When the contents came to Christie’s in 2021, they ran to 436 lots spanning five centuries. Tonight we tour Captain’s House — a Regency-era Georgian terrace built for senior naval officers at the Historic Dockyard Chatham, dating to the age of Trafalgar. When antiques dealer Steven Sprake @sanspretentionlondon acquired it at the onset of Covid, the bones were magnificent but buried under decades of modern accretions. What followed was a meticulous restoration: original floorboards sourced and replaced, 60 period radiators reinstated, copper plumbing crimped by hand under Scheduled Ancient Monument restrictions, cornices repaired in their original style, and every modern Phillips screw swapped for slotted originals sourced from flea markets. . . . Tonight we tour a Madrid apartment that defies every expectation its façade sets. Tucked inside a late 19th-century Neoclassical building on Calle de Sagasta — developed when the Spanish capital was reimagining itself after Haussmann’s Paris — design studio @casajosephine was handed an empty shell and complete creative freedom, approaching the project less as decoration than as scenography. Their guiding metaphors: a 16th-century merchant ship laden with silk and gold leaf, and the interior of a jewellery case — luminous, silk-lined, glowing from within. Every surface was chosen to shift in changing light — walnut travertine, onyx, wild silk, aged mirror, and a masterful interplay of brass, chrome, and bronze. Tonight we tour a Lower Pacific Heights Victorian, and I have to say, this one hit close to home. I live in my own 1894 San Francisco Victorian, and if there’s one thing these houses never let you forget, it’s those soaring ceilings and generous proportions. They’re the reason I fell in love with mine, and they’re front and center here too. What makes this project so special is the story behind it. Designer Hana Mattingly of local firm @innenstudio was brought in by a British family relocating from London — and rather than leaving that chapter behind, she wove it right into the bones of the house. Smart move, because San Francisco Victorians and London townhouses are closer cousins than most people realize. She preserved every original detail she could — plaster moldings, picture rails, ceiling medallions — and layered in a warm British sensibility through Shaker cabinetry in Farrow & Ball’s Studio Green, Rose Uniacke pendants, and a wonderfully moody checkered marble bathroom. At the rear, a full glass pocketing wall opens to the garden and reminds you exactly where you are: California. I just love what Innen Studio has done here. Tonight we revisit the Tuscan tower home of @roberto.baciocchi — the architect behind Miuccia Prada’s global retail vision — a 14th-century stone fortification in Reazzo, the village immortalised by Roberto Benigni as the setting for La Vita è Bella. Spanning four floors around an excavated interior garden, the tower was built in the 14th century, expanded in the 16th, and completed in the 18th. Baciocchi restored its original character with care — exposed beams, frescoed ceilings, irregular mouldings, and generous stone staircases — while refusing any decorative orthodoxy within. Across every room, mid-century design icons by Saarinen, Panton, Matégot, and Mangiarotti sit alongside antiques, op-art rugs in the bold palettes of the 1970s. . . . The project is the first residential work of young French architect and designer @edgarjayet , who transformed a crumbling structure into a richly layered interior that moves fluently across centuries. Tonight we tour a Georgian townhouse in Bath 😍 — built in 1767 by John Wood the Younger, just before he began work on the Royal Crescent, and now home to natural paint specialist Cassandra Ellis, founder of @atelier.ellis . The house arrived in poor condition: a leaking roof, damp throughout, and up to fifteen layers of lino and wallpaper concealing its original bones. Ellis’s approach was characteristically principled — restore from the outside in, fix what makes the building feel correct, and resist the temptation to reconfigure. Windows were removed one by one and restored by hand. The original layout was left entirely intact. What emerged is an interior shaped by restraint and deep material honesty: soft, hand-mixed colours that listen to the light, salvaged furniture given new life, and the quiet confidence of someone who understands that a building’s bones matter more than any decorative decision made on top of them. . . .
