26 weeks with our rainbow 🌈 I was finally feeling good enough to head out and harvest some from the garden. Feeling absolutely huge these days but also so thankful the garden is producing early so we can prepare for baby boy. Just last week alone, I canned over 50 jars, dehydrated so many trays, and froze countless sides and ingredients. Looking forward to November, when the outside starts to go still, and I should be snuggling a tiny baby beside the wood stove without a care in the world. That will be my reward. Wood stove views 🪵 We installed this wood stove last year to mainly replace our furnace. She’s a beast and does well at heating our 2000 square foot farmhouse. Today, we tore the entire thing apart and gave it a good cleaning and wow, can you feel a difference in the heat. Power goes out? No problem. Also due to being able to keep our furnace set at 58° which virtually never turns on, we’re able to save at least $1,600 a year in propane costs. Maybe even more. She can be a messy thing, but there truly is nothing like a wood heated home! Do you have a wood stove? Have to troll a little since everyone who doesn’t understand the point of canning always asks why we’re preparing for the apocalypse 🤪 The amount of empty jars stacking up is insane! Some nights for dinner, especially if it’s a soup night, I might bring up 7+ jars. Then there’s dinners that only require one. Hubby suggested building a rack for all my empties since I haven’t quite figured out how to store over 500+ of them once we’ve used them up and they have to wait for next spring. This month I’m focusing on a fridge and freezer clean out. Every day I look through our food storage to see what I can pull out and can. The other night it was 3 quarts of cranberry juice, 14 quarts of venison broth, and 2 pints of diced tomatoes. Food that would have gone to waste and spoiled, now preserved for years on my shelf. When my oldest daughter was little, her meals often came from the freezer—microwaved chicken nuggets and French fries were her staples. At the time, I didn’t realize how much I was setting her up for a life of craving convenience over nutrition. I knew something had to change if I wanted her to grow up healthy and strong. It was a process, though, because you can’t just replace everything overnight. I started small—swapping out one processed food at a time, like frozen fries for roasted potatoes or a fresh veggie on her plate. Her palette adjusted slowly, and those small victories added up. Now, she insists on sitting down to eat with me and her daddy, sharing the same homemade meals we’re having. There’s hardly a food she won’t try. I’ve learned that feeding our kids isn’t just about filling their bellies—it’s about fueling their bodies and teaching them that real food, not convenience, is what they deserve. Candids in the kitchen ✨ Trying to embrace the magic + mess of this season. And also forcing myself to keep the camera out so I can get one photo each day to remember how quickly this time passes us by. Ryan made salt dough ornaments while baby brother lay peacefully nearby. We use a rolling mini crib to keep him involved and close to us. I was shocked just how easy the salt dough really is and we can’t wait to spend the afternoon painting them together. I had things to do, a house to clean, and laundry to fold. But in the midst of a chaotic and quite grievous Monday, when she asked if we could bake, I did her one better.
