Have you made this mistake too? 🫠 Vulnerability here: my business grew a LOT this year. I had two booths to stock as well as a website and online sales to source for. But somehow I still managed to buy too much inventory. How much is too much, you ask? It’s not about a specific number - because that will be different for everyone, depending on your situation. But for me, I realized my overbuying had brought a ton of clutter and overwhelm into my home. I had inventory that was sitting for months before being listed or put in my booth. I wasn’t able to pay myself as much as I needed because I was sinking everything back into stock. I’m not shaming myself or beating myself up. But I’m recognizing it as a chance to slow down my buying and put money back in my pocket. It means fighting against FOMO and my dopamine addiction - going to fewer estate sales and saying NO more than yes. I just read this fun fact in the amazing book Mudlark by @london.mudlark - and when I found a large case of typesetting drawers at @bellapatinakc I had to share the history with friends. This is one of my FAVORITE things about antiques - every day I learn something new that deepens my understanding and appreciation of the world. ✨Don’t compare yourself to where others are today; look back at how far you’ve come in 2024. As 2024 wraps up, I’ve been thinking a LOT about how much my business has grown. I made a lot of mistakes and learned SO much from them - I’m thankful for that! I also made big decisions and took risks that paid off. That encourages me when I get bogged down in the daily tasks of keeping the business afloat. It’s easy for me to look at other dealers and feel behind or inexperienced or unsuccessful.
