I skipped the flea market last weekend. Mom duties, hockey game, Christmas prep, etc, kept me busy. Somehow, Goodwill knew I hadn’t recently gone vintage hunting (and needed a shot of dopamine after a busy day of holiday errands) and provided. The first piece I picked up was the banded Lord Nelson pitcher. They aren’t super old antiques but I love finding them (even if they are only as old as me). The next aisle held the smaller stoneware pitcher and two aisles past that gave me the ironstone coffee pot. Thank you, Goodwill, for giving me perfect finds and a chance to relax my shoulders and take a deep breath during this crazy month. My oven has been broken for weeks. A technician came to check it out mid-November. He ordered a part. The part came. A new technician came back yesterday. He fiddled around. He said it was fixed. He left in a mad dash before I had a chance to even step into the kitchen to check the oven. I mean, I’ve seriously never seen a person leave a house and drive away so quickly. My oven is still broken. When I called him to tell him the bad news, he was probably still in my neighborhood because I ran, full tilt, to my phone. (I can move quickly, too.) He said he’d be back today. We’ll see. Wish me luck! Would I normally drive through a sketchy, out of the way neighborhood then make a turn down a long, hidden driveway? No, that’s how horror movies start. Would I find myself in that exact situation willingly if, at the head of that neighborhood was an “Estate Sale ➡️” sign? Absolutely. By the time I got there the house was nearly empty. There’s exactly one thing that came out of this November that I am thankful for. After a string of political disappointments, C*vid that refuses to fully leave, the inability to find a good pair of boots after tossing all of mine from previous years this spring, all of the above leaving me completely behind on all things Christmas… I am thankful that this is the first year in approximately twenty that Thanksgiving was not planned to be at my house. I usually love hosting this holiday but since it’s evidently “Bad Luck November”, of course my oven has been broken for weeks. So, tomorrow I will borrow my mother-in-law’s oven to prep some desserts, load them into the car on Thursday morning and head to visit my sister, who is healthy, owns proper footwear, and has a fully functional kitchen. (I should also mention that, while everything else went to sh*t, this November I celebrated my 25th wedding anniversary. On the beach in Puerto Rico. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” In the past week and a half, we’ve gotten the election results (bad), I celebrated my 25th wedding anniversary (good), we took a long weekend trip to Puerto Rico (good), and I got C*vid (bad). That’s a lot of ups and down in ten days. One thing that being sick teaches you… you are important. Many things that are my responsibility have been passed to other people, from getting my son to hockey games to making the pecan pie for my husband’s work lunch, walking the dog to ensuring the sports laundry gets done to taking out the trash. I’ve only been truly out of commission for 24 hours but I’ve been giving direction from bed while half asleep ever since.
