Are paper cups really made of paper? Think again. Most paper cups are lined with a thin film of plastic which prevents the paper from getting wet and the beverage from leaking. This lining is made of polyethylene, so most "paper" cups can not be recycled with regular paper. It requires a completely separate collection and special processing. Not only can this cup not be recycled, the plastic lining is also leaching, toxic chemicals and micro plastics into the hot beverages that are being consumed. So next time you get your beverage to go, take a minute to think about what you are consuming. Or better yet, bring your own cup.
