Super surprised to see this happened to my quilt up in Duluth today! 🎉 The little squares are about 3/8" and the whole quilt is about 20" square.

It's done! I finished the last little bit in the hotel room at QuiltCon, and wore it the Friday of the show. I'm so pleased with how it turned out, despite all the yarn and sizing drama. Getting closer to sewing stuff together! 🎉 I have never once checked my crochet gauge in my life and so that middle giant granny is only 16" instead of 23", even though I'm using the recommended hook. Oops. 😬 But that does mean I get to make 31 more little grannies to fill in and make things bigger! I also had to dye a bit more yarn as I ran out of a few key colors. . #grannysquarecardigan #grannysquare

I realized pretty quickly that the mini skeins from the kit weren't going to be enough yarn for this project if I'm holding them double... Lucky for me the kit also came with 17 balls of gray Metropolis that I'd assumed I'd use for background. I decided to overdye the gray and a few of the mini skeins that didn't fit with my color scheme (red, bright yellows, and grays). I've been wanting to make a giant granny cardigan since I saw Kara Saun wearing one on Project Runway season 20/ep 9 earlier this year but I didn't have the stash/scraps to pull it off. I went in search of a mini skein wool yarn bundle and happened upon a Sheepjes Metropolis 2023 CAL kit on clearance! I've been saving it for months for a "treat yourself" kind of week and the holidays seemed like a good time! I made my first granny square afghan when I was maybe 12 or 13, so it always makes me happy to go back to them.  . The pattern I'm starting with is the #kaleidoscopecardigan by @themissingyarn. The pattern calls for DK weight and Metropolis is only fingering weight, so I'm holding it double for a very subtle marled look.

Kids are back at school! 🥳🥳🥳 I last pulled this out and posted about it 99 weeks ago, 🤦‍♀️ but I've thought of it often--it's one of my top "I really want to finish it" WIP quilts. . Working on this one takes up the entire main entry floor and we usually have kids and so many dogs running around. Today is a low dog day, so *finally* out it came! The only sewing I've been doing lately is working on a massively putzy project for the MQ show (due in two weeks!). In my non-sewing time, though, I've been making some flowers! I recently finished all the pieces of a bird cherry branch and am assembling it into several stems this week. I was just gifted these five huge Sunbrella sample books (thanks @markdenmsp!), and for a couple of days I've been puzzling about what to make with them. They're nice big chunks of weather-resistant acrylic fabric, and the fabric is lightweight and pliable/sewable enough to work with easily, but it's not soft like a quilting cotton, so a regular quilt is out. . Whenever my family goes to sit somewhere, like a beach or park, the blankets/quilts/towels we bring are never big enough, and the ones we have are made from cotton so I worry about their longevity when exposed to the elements. So, I'm going to make a gigantic picnic/beach quilt. 🏖 I'm also adding this to the list of my sustainable sewalong projects for the year. . What would you make if you had sample books like these? Pattern is done! Today is upcycled quilt top 9/9. This one used five shirts and a navy sheet. It took me around 3-4 hours to sew together. . The color scheme for this one is greens and blues--It's a nice coincidence that this is the one I end with on Earth day! 🌏 . 6" lone star! I think I need to make three more so I can have a mini... First pic is compared to one of my my Stars upon Stars lone stars, which is 12". . This is almost reaching the limits of what is possible with this technique because of bulk and seam allowances... And the precut pieces are 0.5625" x 1.125"!
