New trick for avoiding dinner disappointments: only visit restaurants after they’ve successfully stuck around for at least a year & still have a good google rating ✌️ Or… check my page bcs I only write honest reviews! You know if you’ve been here any time at all, my pet peeve is dinners that make me wish I’d saved my money & stayed at home 🫠 @burmasocial.sg has recently opened a second outlet at Siglap but I decided to be fashionably late to the original at Tras Street 💁‍♀️ Never having eaten Burmese food before, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but I’d heard good things & drooled over enough pictures to know it would be tasty! This meal impressed me; there’s always something fun about trying a new cuisine with novel flavours & dishes you’ve never even heard of! 🇲🇲 The tea leaf salad wouldn’t be to everyone’s taste due to the bitterness of the tea 🍃 but it was a win for us. Fresh & balanced, it made us feel like we’d got some nourishment, no matter what came next. The Burmese Tohu is an absolute must-order in my opinion, nutty, slightly sweet, crisp yet also chewy morsels. Delish! I would go back for this alone. Chicken & coriander dumplings were fairly predictable but packed with flavour. The Mohinga, a Burmese dish I’m surprised isn’t more well-known, was comforting & tasty. Delicate barramundi, noodles, crisp tempeh-like chunks, egg, veggies, all waiting to be enrobed in the softly aromatic, silky, slightly tangy sauce. We always find room for dessert on date night, mostly bcs I feel like it’s my “indulgent meal” but also bcs I kinda feel like it’s my duty to you guys to try?! Good excuse, no? The dessert menu here seemed a bit lacklustre though, perhaps bcs there were so many unique dishes on the main menu 🤷‍♀️ I’d hoped to find something interesting but cheesecake & ice-cream dishes were our lot; so we settled for gula melaka sago with coconut. Undoubtedly a crowd pleaser, it’s a fail safe option; a good & bad thing, I suppose. I’d definitely recommend dinner here if you’re bored of the same old cuisines or didn’t try it a year ago when it was trending! lol. Definitely did NOT expect to feel so festive! 🎄🧣✨🎁 Bundled up in layers, clear blue skies & cool crisp air, Christmas trees & bows everywhere! I couldn’t believe how Christmassy Seoul has become since we left just over a decade ago! 📍 Here are a few of very BEST AREAS FOR SHOPPING and CAFE-HOPPING at ANY time of year… But especially at Christmas time if you enjoy soaking in that warm and cozy festive feeling❣️ ✨ Doean-Daero 11-Gil ✨ This street in particular but also the streets parallel to this and Garasou-gil are home to some of Seoul’s best independent cafes and boutiques. Almost every cafe had a tree up while others have gone all out. The most amazing decorations we saw in this area were @front_seoul 🌲 ✨ Namdaemun-ro, Myeong-dong ✨ Myeongdong is Seoul’s most famous shopping district. Tbh, it’s crazily touristy now, but is still a must-visit area if you’ve never been to Seoul I think. For Christmas vibes here, walk south down the main road, Namdaemun-Ro, from Lotte department store to Shinsagae department store. You’ll see the biggest light displays and amazing decorations on all the stores here! Shinsagae has a gigantic LED that plays a continuous animated Christmas display with lights on the street outside. You can view it roadside but head to the second floor of the Starbucks opposite and snag a seat in the window to watch it from the warmth. ✨ Seoulsup 2-Gil ✨ Adjacent to the pretty Seoul Forest park is a really charming neighbourhood that’s also home to heaps of independent cafes and lovely boutique shops. You’ll find the buildings wrapped in garlands and trees twinkling inside most of them. ✨ Bonus Places ✨ - Hyundai Department Store at Apgujeong station always had (back when nobody else did!) a big Christmas display out front and happily, still does! - @cafe_layered on Bukchon-ro felt seriously like walking into Mrs Claus’s kitchen, in the best possible way! 🤶 We did so many fun things in Seoul & also ate so much, we had a truly wonderful time. A secret place you simply CANNOT miss if you come to Seoul! The most beautiful place in Seoul imho BUT entry is highly-limited and needs to be booked in advance, so save this post now and then read on for what you need to know so you don’t miss seeing it 🫰 Truly splendid in any season, whether that’s with the fresh green of spring 🌱 the full bloom of summer & the lotus flowers 🪷 the blazing colours of autumn 🍂 or cloaked in snow or frost in winter ❄️ the Secret Garden tucked inside the ancient walls of Changdeokgung (one of the five royal palaces here) is one of my favourite places to wander - in the world! An expansive forest garden hides the king and queen’s quarters, a library that once contained 30,000 books, pavilions, multiple lotus ponds, and the most gorgeous pathways that meander through the trees. 🍂 HOW TO VISIT 🍂 Entry is VERY limited (to preserve the peace and tranquility) and only possible with a guided, ticketed time slot. It often sells out in advance of the day but you can secure yourself a slot with the info below :) The guided tour is an hour and while you are allowed to branch off alone at any time, I recommend doing it at least once to learn the history of the gardens. After the tour concludes, you’re free to wander the area for as long as you like, which, if you have the time, is when you can enjoy it as the King did, in all its tranquil and resplendent natural beauty. Tickets go on sale online six days in advance. They’re roughly $5 SGD per person. When we booked, they sold out almost instantly, so keep this in mind and maybe have a back-up day available jic!
