Were you recommended converse or vans for lifting? 👀 I used to recommend them to everyone, but here’s why you should stop wearing them to the gym: It’s simple, they aren’t foot shaped. If your goal is to maximize your lower body strength, size, or power, these shoes are holding you back. When big toe function is inhibited in a tapered toe shoe, your potential for connecting to your glutes is dampened. It also sets you up for what I call “extrinsic takeover”. Extrinsic takeover is when your toes need to claw and hammer in order to stabilize the foot. It’s when your extrinsic foot muscles take on the job of foot stability—which is actually the job of the intrinsic foot muscles. But when your toes are being crammed together, the intrinsic foot muscles don’t have much space to do their job and they start offloading their work to the extrinsic muscles. The solution is so very simple: Ditch the damn toe crushers, and go barefoot or get flat FOOT SHAPED shoes. The ones pictured here are @vibramfivefingers V-Train 2.0: my favs! The advice for common low leg issues (like tight calves) is so mediocre. It’s not that rolling out your calves is bad, it’s not. I recommend it a lot! The more I do this, the more I realize how lacking training is when we’re confined to a gym. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the gym (I also do 1 gym session every day in addition to this when I’m on LIVEHARD), but a lot of people go to the gym for their health without realizing it’s missing some key components. My outdoor workouts on phase 2 of #livehard are looking different and I LOVE it. I want to rock crawl everyday for the rest of my life. Let me tell you why… 👣I immediately felt like I was getting some missing movement nutrient that my body had been craving. It was like gulping down a glass of cold water after the longest hottest hike ever. 👣The mind power and brain work of ensuring each step results in me staying upright and not face planting on sharp, slippery, hard rocks is a healthy fear I think we all could use in today’s world. 🤷🏼‍♀️😂 👣My feet and hands felt so alive after just one round of this. There really is nothing better for our tactile body parts than diverse sensory experiences. 👣I was more agile and fluid in every single attempt. I could feel my core turning on and my arms and legs working better together each go around. I’m a big fan of natural movements, crawling patterns, and just navigating the ground with your body in general. But this adds so much more to that practice. Proceed at your own risk.
