One of the most common questions I get in the office is how to relieve tension in the middle back or work with hunched over work from home posture - here’s Dr. Martin’s foam rolling tips or tricks! Foam rolling the middle back can help relieve tension and improve mobility in the thoracic spine. Here’s how to do it safely and effectively: Steps for Foam Rolling the Middle Back: 1. Preparation: • Position the Foam Roller: Place the foam roller horizontally on the ground. • Lie on Your Back: Sit on the ground with your knees bent and feet flat. Position the foam roller under your middle back, around the bottom of your ribcage. • Support Your Head: Interlace your fingers behind your head or cross your arms over your chest to support your neck. 2. Starting the Roll: • Lift Hips: Gently lift your hips off the ground to engage your core. • Roll Slowly: Use your legs to slowly push yourself up and down on the foam roller, focusing on the area from just below your shoulder blades to the middle of your back. • Control the Movement: Roll slowly, pausing on any tight or tender spots for 20–30 seconds to allow the muscle to release. 3. Breathing: • Take deep, controlled breaths while rolling to help release tension in your muscles. 4. Avoid Rolling the Lower Back: Be cautious not to roll too far down into the lower back, as foam rolling this area without proper support can cause strain. 5. Repeat: Continue for about 1–2 minutes, or as needed, and stop if you feel any sharp pain or discomfort. Tips: • Focus on Relaxation: Try to relax your muscles as much as possible while foam rolling to maximize the benefits. • Adjust Pressure: If the pressure feels too intense, reduce it by keeping your hips closer to the ground. • Posture Check: Keep your head and neck in alignment to avoid straining your cervical spine. Shoot me a message or give me a thumbs up if you found this helpful !

Using a lacrosse ball or a Yoga Tune Up® ball to roll out tight muscles offers targeted, deep-tissue massage that helps release muscle knots, improve circulation, and increase mobility. Unlike foam rollers, these smaller, firmer tools can pinpoint hard-to-reach areas like the shoulders, hips, or feet, making them especially effective for breaking up adhesions and promoting muscle recovery. Regular use can also enhance body awareness and reduce the risk of injury by maintaining healthy muscle function.

The Deadlift: Forging a Resilient Spine and Lower Back The deadlift, when performed with proper technique, is a powerhouse exercise for building a strong and healthy spine and lower back. Its effectiveness lies in its ability to target the entire posterior chain—the network of muscles along the backside of the body. This includes the erector spinae, the muscles that run vertically along the spine, which are crucial for maintaining an upright posture and providing spinal support. By strengthening these muscles, the deadlift essentially creates a natural corset of muscle around the spine, enhancing its stability and reducing the risk of injury during everyday activities. Beyond direct muscle strengthening, deadlifts also promote increased bone mineral density in the lumbar spine and hips. The significant load managed during the lift stimulates the bones to adapt and become stronger, a key factor in preventing age-related bone loss and conditions like osteoporosis. Furthermore, the deadlift is a supreme core-strengthening exercise. To execute the lift safely and effectively, the abdominal muscles and obliques must work in concert to brace the torso, creating intra-abdominal pressure that further stabilizes the spine. This comprehensive engagement of the back, hips, and core muscles translates to a more robust and resilient lower back, capable of safely handling the demands of both athletic endeavors and daily life.
