[Issue 58] Thanks largely to the combination of its simplicity and its versatility, the 555 Timer IC has become genuinely ubiquitous. In this month's article, we explore the device itself and its variants, its operation and different functional modes, and then finish by making a giant one from discrete components, thanks to @evil.mad.scientist . After a brief history, we discuss how the 555 functions, and modes of operation, including Astable, Monostable, Bistable, and Schmitt Trigger. Read all about it on page 64 of Issue 58, or visit https://diyode.io/058swyw (🔗 Link in bio) Follow us: @diyodemag Save this post for later reference. #diyode #diyodemag #diyelectronics #electronics #electronicsproject #electronicsprojects #555timer #integratedcircuit #ne555 #55eric #electronicsengineering #circuitdesign #electronicslovers #555 #electronicengineering #semiconductor #555timers #555tim #analogcircuits #analogelectronics #integratedcircuits #electronics101

[Issue 57] A servo driver project using 555 timers and discrete components, without the need for a microcontroller. There was a time, not too long ago, when microcontrollers were not so easily accessible to the average maker. Coding languages were more complex and less well-known outside engineering circles and like-minded people. Microcontrollers themselves were more complex, far harder to program than the bootloader-equipped versions of today. In addition, they were often quite expensive and less accessible in the domestic market. Servos themselves have been used in radio control and model railway hobbies for decades, even without microcontrollers. The operating principle has not changed, either. The basic premise is to feed a rectangular wave of fixed frequency to the servo’s control circuit. The width of the high pulse determines the angle of the servo via an internal feedback circuit connected to a potentiometer on the base of the servo output shaft. Our non-microcontroller solution uses two NE555 timers. The first establishes an astable pulse train of consistent frequency, which feeds a monostable circuit to deliver the desired pulse width, which can be adjusted with no possibility of affecting the frequency. In addition, the frequency can be adjusted with no effect on the pulse width. The output from the monostable circuit can directly drive a servo signal pin. We provide two separate options. Potentiometer-follower and switched. You can adapt these circuits to meet your needs. Read all about the project on page 42 of Issue 57 or visit https://diyode.io/057qdpj 🔗 Link in bio 👍 Follow us: @diyodemag 💾 Save this post for later reference.

[Issue 59] This beautiful timepiece combines nixie tubes, Arduino and freeform electronics. Curious maker and engineering student, Robin Gorius @goriusrobin, wanted to make a project using nixie tubes. After sourcing some from Ukraine, Robin got to work on building an Arduino driven clock. He then went next level by using freeform electronics for an artistic look. We got in touch with Robin to find out more. Read all about it on page 43 of Issue 59, or visit https://diyode.io/059qtwb (link in bio) Follow us: @diyodemag Save this post for later reference. #diyode #diyodemag #diyelectronics #electronics #electronicsproject #electronicsprojects #freeform #freeformelectronics #nixietube #nixietubes #arduino #arduinoproject #arduinoprojects #arduinofun #arduinolove #arduinomega #arduinouno #arduino_uno #microcontroller #arduinocircuit #arduinopro #arduinopromini #rtcclock #Atmega328p #K155ND1 #74HC595N #pcbdesigns

Meet the Andotrope... an impressive replica of one of Gehn’s holographic Imagers from the game Riven: The Sequel to Myst. Made by Mike Ando from Brisbane QLD, this curious device works similar to a Zoetrope, except that it uses two tablets back-to-back that have their displays synchronised, with a vertical viewing slit cut through the black cylinder directly in front of each tablet. Clever, huh?! Read all about it on our website (Link in bio). 🔗 Feature link: https://diyode.io/078gdvv 📖 Issue: 78, page 61 👍️ Follow us: @diyodemag and the amazing @riumplus 💾 Save this post for later. #diyodemag #diyelectronics #electronics #electronicsproject #electronicsprojects #learnelectronics #Andotrope #riumplus #Zoetrope #Omnidirectional #Myst #Riven #Gehn #Imager #Prop #Replica #VideoGameProp #Holographic #Holograph #Hologram #raspberrypi4 #raspberrypiprojects

[Issue 41] The CD4047 is another one of those Integrated Circuits (ICs) that many makers won’t even realise they could benefit from. In Issue 41, we take a look at what it does and how it is implemented. The hands-on builds (Shown in the pics) are pretty simple, and are really rigs for exploring the behaviour of the CD4047 for different input conditions. These builds will allow you to observe the behaviour of the outputs and explore the effect of the retrigger and reset inputs. The builds are only a starting point though, as you explore. The schematics will help you make the relevant changes, there just won't be a Fritzing for those. Read all about the 4047 in Issue 41 or on our website. 🔗 Article link: https://diyode.io/041xkgm (Link in bio) 📖 Issue: 41, page 25 👍️ Follow us: @diyodemag 💾 Save this post for later. #diyodemag #diyelectronics #electronics #electronicsproject #electronicsprojects #learnelectronics #cd4047 #integratedcircuit #electronics101 #electronicsengineering #electronicsengineeringstudent
