While visiting Calcutta during October's Durga Puja festival, Ampersand's founder @jamesjayasundera learnt about the complex and collaborative stages of creating a durga idol: 1. Sourcing the clay 2. Preparation of the frame (kamatho) 3. Appling the first layer of clay (khaar mati) 4. Adding the second layer of clay 5. Painting the idol 6. Painting the eyes of the idol, known as chokkhudan 7. Dressing the idol in clothes, jewellery and accessories 8. Adding decorations like the crown or gold and silver fabrics to enhance the idol’s regal appearance Families commission their own idols and travel to the banks of the Hooghly River together to bring the festival to a close.
