“Won’t it encourage my dog to do it more?” Is a phrase I hear all the time and a valid one. Technically, the more they practice something, the easier it will be for our dogs to keep doing it. But when behaviours are so built in, our dogs don’t need practice. They are self rewarding, and natural. So they will continue to seek out ways to do them. What we can do is practice doing the behaviours in certain situations, on certain things or in specific areas. It’s normal to focus on negative comments far more than the good ones. Our brain takes these comments as environmental threats and we start to obsess about them. This may have served as a survival instinct once when those threats were predators. But now, it would be more helpful if we could just let them go. When is safe and convenient to so, it’s nice to let our dogs get as smelly and dirty as they like. Letting them practice natural behaviours at appropriate times gives them the outlets they need.
