Hello I am Serene, a-junior-college-teacher-turned-stay-home-mum-turned-calligrapher-mumpreneur (what a mouthful) ❤️ As I look back at the year 2023, I realized it has been already 4 years since I made the decision to resign from teaching in 2020, a work that I truly love. That pivotal change at the crossroad was not anything I ever imagined I would do since I have always wanted to be a teacher, loved teaching and was doing well in the education ministry BUT it was my first courageous step forward to a decision I knew was in alignment to my value, prioritizing family. And it was THAT FIRST STEP that led on to many OTHER STEPS the Lord led me to take- rekindling my love for calligraphy, connecting with amazing people who became friends, building @sundaysdawn to be a platform that would empower growth and inspire positive change in the community and opening doors to opportunities that I could only praise Him for. Facilitating Tea Lyfe & Crossroads with growth friends Jenny @ten_butter_fingers and Zoe @sgsupernanny was one of my major highlights in 2023. It revealed to me how much I missed and loved facilitating workshops (previously part of my work as a senior teacher) and journeying alongside ladies in their personal growth journeys through coaching sessions. Praying that where the Lord leads, He will pave the way for me to take courageous steps forward. That through facilitating the learning of brush pen calligraphy, in workshops (schools/companies/brands) and in membership Calligraphy Growth Circles, people will be blessed and encouraged. My heart has always been and will always be to see personal growth and positive change in the lives of the community that is being built here, YOU :) That this space (and we together) continue to shine His light a little brighter, through words both written and spoken. And you friend, if you are at life’s crossroads, know that you are not alone. If you would like to speak to someone, I hope you reach out to any one of us @ten_butter_fingers @sgsupernanny @sundaysdawn. Excepts from @saltandlight.sg article beautifully written by @graaatitude. In His hands, (Humbled) Serene

Modern calligraphy practice is meditative and helps you switch off from all your worries as you are entirely in the moment creating beautiful shapes on paper. Many students, throughout the 6 sessions over 3 days @hermes, express their surprise as to how mindful it can be and each time I get this feedback I am more and more HUMBLED and GRATEFUL to share this passion and this gift that keeps on giving. “I have always wanted to try calligraphy but never had a chance to and thought it would be too hard at my age to pick up anything new but you gave me hope that I can actually do this. Will pursue it further and see where it goes.” ~ a fellow participant “I wanted to leave early but you made the session very welcoming and I enjoyed myself so much I actually stayed throughout the whole two hours. Now I am late for my next appointment but it is worth it.” ~ a fellow participant “I can tell that you were a teacher previously because of the methodical way you explained the concepts behind the ratio, the curvatures and the structure of the writing. I like it.” ~ a fellow participant “This teaches me to breath and slow down. I feel myself calmer and less angry. Maybe I really needed this.” ~ a fellow participant In the years of journeying with individuals in this calligraphy journey, many share of how their calligraphy practice had helped them battle a tough time (postpartum depression), gave them a routine that allowed them to be still and learn to slow down and left them with a sense of calm and clarity. If you have always wanted to pick up brush pen calligraphy and go deep into learning this art form, give yourself the permission to start. It would be the beginning of something beautiful. “…Father, I pray that Serene will use her five loaves and two fishes…” As my dear friend prayed this over me just before the calligraphy workshop, I felt so strongly in my spirit “I will go before you,” I heard God whisper. The past few days before the lead up to this workshop in the school, I prepared hours and rehearsed what to say and how to say, wrote out pages of pointers and key messages that I wanted to share as the Holy Spirit’s compassion overwhelmed me – I felt the anxiety, the fear, the tension of these brilliant students and I prayed for days for each of them. And on the workshop day, I barely shared points of what I prepared, the rest of the words that came out of my mouth, apart from the calligraphy content, was unprepared for; I opened up about my struggles in my younger days and shared openly how my perfectionist nature and how my people-pleasing led to an unhealthy strive and competition that drove me to a valley in my academic journey. That even though my family members didn’t say that they expected me to do well in school, it was my own pride and desire to want to please them, that pushed me beyond what I could handle. During my JC years, the Lord revealed to me that I was struggling because I was striving in my own strength, I had to learn to “let go and let Him” and rest in the knowledge that my identity was not in my academic achievements but that I was His. He showed me that I could flourish and be that person that He called me to be, without having to “fit in”. I am again reminded that His way is always better, then and now. That we can CHOOSE to give Him our five loaves and two fish and TRUST that He will multiply; our time, our talent, our efforts and all that we have. “Thank you for your message today, I needed to hear that.” - a polite quiet student stayed back and waited in line to say that to me. This calligraphy workshop infused with messages of hope and strive was one that was not just for the students but even as I shared, the message was speaking to me so strongly too. That if we have given our all, it WILL be pleasing sacrifice to Him. I pray the same for all students, us teachers and parents. Love, Serene

Dear Zoe, One year has passed since TLC. It feels too long because so much has happened in the months and yet so short. You left us on 14 July this year and we found ourselves lost for words as we grieved. We have been so busy but our schedules cleared in such an unexplainable way yesterday we found ourselves available for an unplanned catch up. It was the catch up we both didn’t realise we needed to hold the space to cry together and grieve the ache of not being able to tell you how much we miss you. It was God’s divine way of helping us to heal and write this letter to you. Zoe, you have always called us your sisters, so today dear sister, we celebrate your birthday. Today was supposed to be about celebrating you, yet here we are, grieving the loss of someone who brought so much life. You’re the queen of surprises and you would have been the one planning surprises for everyone else, making sure each person felt loved and seen. It’s hard to believe that we are here to honor your memory instead. You were a light, Zoe—vibrant, fierce, and endlessly giving. You poured out your love like no one else, celebrating people with a joy that was uniquely yours. You always showed up, for every birthday, in WhatsApp conversation, every little detail that mattered to those around you. You had a gift for seeing the best in each of us and making sure we knew it. It was as if you carried a spark, and anyone who came near was warmed by it. We can still hear your words of encouragement, the way you would tell us with your strong voice to “just go ahead and DO IT, you can!” and you truly believed in us more than we do in ourselves. We still feel the weight of your words, the impact of your presence, even though you’re gone. “Did I live? Did I love? Did I matter?” Those are the words and the legacy you’ve left for all of us. And we celebrate you. The last 2 pics were your final words to us and showed us what was on your heart. You always wrote letters to us and this is our letter to you on your birthday. We miss you so terribly, Zoe. You are loved, so cherished and deeply treasured. Love, Jenny + Serene

Our days often get filled with routines, plans, and unexpected turns, and it’s easy to let the months slip by… As the year winds down, there’s something truly powerful in pausing to look back. May this time of reflection gives us the chance to notice how we’ve changed, to see the quiet but profound ways we’ve grown. So, as you sit with these questions, give yourself the gift of honesty and kindness. Let the insights that surface guide you toward a meaningful close to this year. Even better, share your reflections with someone close to you, inviting them into your journey as well :):):) Whether it’s a renewed intention, a word of gratitude, or simply a deeper sense of peace, may these moments of reflection light the way for all that’s to come. Love, Serene 📌 Save this post to revisit these questions when you’re ready to dive into some thoughtful reflection.

November is my favorite month (is it yours too?!) because it feels like a gentle pause… like a moment to breathe before all the festivities start and take in how far we’ve come, while quietly dreaming of what’s next. While it’s tempting to start wrapping things up (I know it’s about time when the yearly journal just have a few pages left til the end of it), maybe November is actually a beginning—may it be a chance to lean into a new rhythm, explore an idea, or nurture a little seed of possibility? I know one thing that I am looking forward to do is to dream with my husband about what’s next for us as a couple, as a family and for our children. As we look toward the close of the year, what’s one thing you’d love to start this month? Something that would make your heart sing, knowing you began it now and carried it into 2025? Love, Serene

October was a month filled with meaningful Connections, deep Conversations, and inspiring Collaborations. From catching up with friends and sharing life’s recent twists to working together on projects that truly resonate, each encounter felt purposeful and fulfilling. So many highlights: in-person sessions, a workshop with pre-university students in school and crossing the border over the children’s day weekend for some family time together 🥹 Reflecting on these moments, October was a reminder of how energizing it is to be surrounded by people who share the same passion for growth, creativity, and purpose. November, we are ready for you 🙌

When I resigned as an educator four years ago, I never thought I would be back in schools again, and that made my heart ache a little because I love teaching, love students, love fellow educators and love schools. But the Lord truly knows our heart’s desires, and when He gives us a burden for certain groups of people, He finds a way to bring us to them—or them to us. I have a heart for schools because they are places where students can explore, fail, try again, and ultimately discover who they are. As educators, leaders, and mentors, we have a chance to speak life into their journeys, and I pray we make the most of the time we’re given with each young person. These moments are precious and are opportunities, and I hope we steward them well.

During my journaling today, I reflected on the importance of going back to basics. It reminded me that true growth comes from small, simple steps done faithfully over time. We often overlook the basics in parenting or when learning a new skill. We want the end results—close relationships with our kids, the ability to write calligraphy beautifully, dance gracefully, or cook effortlessly—but don’t always take the time to master the fundamentals. In parenting, it’s the daily conversations, being consistently present, and practicing patience in the little moments. In learning a skill, it’s about repetition, understanding the foundations, and putting in the quiet, unseen work. Without these basics, the outcome may not be as lasting or meaningful, no matter how much we desire it. I’m reminded that mastering the foundations takes time, but it’s always worth it. I’d love to invite you to slow down with me and learn brush pen calligraphy through my Journal Calligraphy Zoom session. Together, we’ll focus on the fundamentals of brush pen calligraphy, taking the time to understand each stroke and letterform. Alongside learning, we’ll also pause for reflection and journaling, creating space for a meaningful and introspective time together. It’s an opportunity to embrace the basics, both in the art of writing and in nurturing our own growth. Attend EITHER ONE of the two zoom sessions: 1hr30min - 25 Oct (Friday) ‘24 10:00am Singapore Time OR - 27 Oct (Sunday) ‘24 3:00pm Singapore Time * Replay of zoom live workshop will be made available after 27 October 2024.
