SPECULATOR HISTORY: Gene Tunney, training for the World’s Heavyweight Championship in 1926, brought boxing notoriety to Speculator, NY. Based on a friendship with Bill Osborne as Marines fighting in WW1, Gene chose Bill’s family resort “The Osborne Hotel” as his training camp. An outdoor boxing ring was built on the shore of Lake Pleasant. Crowds of 2,000 people a day and 5,000 on the weekends would converge on Speculator to watch Gene train for his upcoming fight vs Jack Dempsey (American World Heavyweight Boxing Champion). 📷: Jay Tunney Archive
