I'm over the moon to have this image named the 2024 Grand Title Winner of the NHM Wildlife Photographer of the Year! An army of western toad tadpoles forage among lily pads in a mountain lake on Vancouver Island. I hope the attention this image brings our amphibians and wetlands leads to much-needed and urgent protections. If you know of an important place in your backyard, let's rally the community together and fight for it's protection. Thank you @nhm_wpy for including a wetlands category and shining a light on these important ecosystems. #wpy60 #wpy #wildlifephotographeroftheyear #naturalhistorymuseum @nikoncanada #wildlifephotography #naturephotography
I am beyond excited to announce the immediate release of my first book, Bahamas Underwater - a coffee-table style photo book that celebrates the beauty and diversity of The Bahamas underwater world. This book is very much a collaboration with @breef242 (The Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation). All funds generated from the sale of the book will be used to support BREEF’s Kids Sea Camps which teaches local children about about the ocean and conservation with a hands-on approach. In addition, a copy of the book will be donated to every school in The Bahamas. You can purchase your copy right now by visiting my website shanegross.com! Thank you! *The book was made possible by the generous support of individual donors and the sponsorship of ROLEX through their Perpetual Planet initiative. Rolex supports organizations and initiatives raising environmental awareness and fosters tomorrow’s explorers, scientists and conservationists through grants, and is a key contributor to BREEF’s youth education programs. #BahamasUnderwater #oceanconservation #oceaneducation #newbook #newbookrelease #itsbetterinthebahamas #biodiversity #dolphins #conservation #gottoloooovetheocean
CBC News - The National came to visit us in The Bahamas just before COVID-19. The idea was to bring our message of ocean conservation to an audience that isn't always exposed to it. I think the team at CBC did an incredible job of amplifying our message and I'm beyond grateful to them. Also to @anita.kainrath who was our underwater director of photography! #conservationphotography #conservationstorytelling #oceanconservation @nikoncanada #gottoloooovetheocean
DEEP DIVE: SHANE GROSS Shane Gross is a highly regarded photographer and conservationist, whose work primarily revolves around documenting the natural world and the urgent need for environmental conservation. His photographic style is characterized by a blend of technical precision, artistry, and a deep commitment to storytelling, often focusing on the intricate and fragile ecosystems that are increasingly threatened by human activities. A significant portion of Shane Gross’ portfolio includes stunning underwater imagery, where he captures marine life in their natural habitats. His work brings attention to the beauty and diversity of underwater environments, ranging from vibrant coral reefs to endangered species. His underwater shots are not just visually captivating, but they also convey an emotional narrative about the preservation of these habitats. Gross uses his photography as a tool for advocacy. His images often carry an underlying message about the importance of protecting the environment. Whether it’s documenting coral bleaching or showcasing endangered species, his photographs are designed to raise awareness about the fragile state of ecosystems and the devastating impacts of climate change, pollution, and overfishing. Through his lens, viewers are encouraged not only to marvel at the beauty of nature but to consider the importance of preserving it for future generations.
Today is international book day. My only book (so far) is called Bahamas Underwater. It took me nine years to shoot and I'm proud to say it is now in virtually every school in The Bahamas and proceeds from the sale of the book go to Kids Sea Camps run by @breef242 - my partner on this project. The foreword is written by the amazing Jean-Michel Cousteau of the @oceanfuturessociety To immerse yourself in the incredible ocean of The Bahamas you can order directly from my website or if you're in The Bahamas from @breef242 If you're in Toronto and going to check out the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit there are also a few left in the museum gift shop. Thanks to everyone who has purchased a book already - you have made a contribution to our oceans! Bonus points to anyone who notices the spelling mistake on the cover! #worldbookday #oceanconservation #sharks #itsbetterinthebahamas #bahamasunderwater @marelux_usa @nikoncanada @ilcp_photographers @theccpc #gottoloooovetheocean

Meet Shane. He's the 2024 Wildlife Photographer of the Year Adult Grand Title Winner, and you can see his winning image in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition on now at the Royal BC Museum. Shane took the winning photo right here on Vancouver Island, in a lake just north of Campbell River. While western tadpoles are a fascinating subject (see the pinned post on @royalbcmuseum Instagram for an interview with him all about the photo), we wanted to get to know the man behind the camera a little better. #wpy60 #wpy @shanegrossphoto @nhm_wpy

Hear from #WPY60’s Shane Gross (@shanegrossphoto) on five fun facts about Western toad tadpoles, the subject of his Grand Title award-winning photograph, for #WorldWetlandsDay. To capture ‘The Swarm of Life’, Shane snorkelled in Cedar Lake, Canada, for several hours through carpets of lily pads. Western toads are just one of over 100,000 species that call freshwater wetlands home across the globe. In total, it's estimated that 40% of the world's plant and animal species live in wetlands, despite covering only 6% of the Earth's land surface. Sadly, wetlands are disappearing at an alarming rate. In the UK alone, 90% of wetland habitats have been lost in the last 100 years and more than 10% of the species within them are threatened with extinction. Share this video to help spread the wonder of our planet’s wetlands and the species who call it home! Make sure to visit #WPY60 to see Shane’s otherworldly photograph for yourself too. Tickets available via the link in our bio. #WPY #WildlifePhotographerOfTheYear #WildlifePhotography #NaturePhotography #Nature #Wildlife #Wetlands #Tadpoles #WesternToad #Canada
