Two Mediterranean jellies attach the surface during a "whiting" event at Mar Menor, SE Spain. Mar Menor is the largest saltwater lagoon in the western Mediterranean, located at the outlet of Campo de Cartagena - the so-called "Europe´s orchard" – one of the largest crops across the continent. After decades of intensive agriculture, and mass tourism development, the lagoon started to show signs of collapse in 2016, including eutrophication, anoxia, and mass sea life death. During the summer of 2024, a new bizarre symptom hit the lagoon: whiting. The phenomena took over most of the lagoon, and became visible from space. Not even science agrees about the ultimate causes of whiting, but there seems to be consensus that is the result of a complete rupture of the oceanographic conditions in a body of water. Whether if it´s caused by an excess of photosynthetic activity by cyanobacterial picoplankton, sediment disturbance, or spontaneous chemical rebound effect, whiting happens when calcium carbonate precipitates and its crystals remain suspended in the water column instead of dissolved on it. This creates sort of milky water that dramatically reduces visibility and threatens life by suffocation and sun light blockage. For some, the ongoing environmental crisis of Mar Menor is seen as a small-scale experiment of what the Mediterranean - also a closed sea under extreme human pressure- may experience in the medium term. There're good images, there're bad images, there're shitty images, and then there're images that fit all three categories. A sphinx blenny uses its mouth to take its own turd out of its narrow den. In case you were reading the news, just a kind reminder that there's always room for worsening things up. Smile!💙 . . . . #blenny #comedy #ocean #nature #Narratingnature @angelfitor

Now you see me... now you don't. There's a good reason to name razor a fish. Razorfish Xyrichthys novacula is a sand diver which unusual head profile enable it to thrive where few others can - undersea sand plains. Lost. 2015. Engulfed by a massive tangle of greed, ignorance, arrogance, triviality, tradition, and an oversized political machinery driven by a rudderless society, one more precious endangered butterfly ray vanish in the Spanish Mediterranean. Meanwhile, masses of naive and misinformed Europeans vote to end fishing in our side of the Sea, as the demand for North African and abroad seafood is on the rise. Out of sight, out of mind. Ever since the "conservation conversation" perfused from science to politics, ocean heroes riding a wave of pretentious, unrealistic optimism commanding hordes of lost urban souls did the rest. Fishing, and social fishing management gets worse and worse. The whole sea gets lost on that ray's shy smile. . . . . #savethemediterranean #Mediterranean_Sea #conservation #ocean conservation #Narratingnature @angelfitor
