Meet Twix: From Timid Rescue Dog to Flyball Champion (FDCh)! Twix was first referred to SASH Specialist Surgeon Dr. Richard Looi in 2022 after a serious injury during practice. While competing at full speed, he landed awkwardly on his right hind leg, dislocating it, breaking it in two places, and tearing his tendons. His owners feared his athletic career was over. But after surgery and dedicated rehabilitation under SASH Sport Medicine Specialists Dr. Naomi Boyd and Dr. Barry Cherno, less than a year later, he’s back in the competition ring, stronger than ever. Twix is still competing and is the perfect example of how a holistic approach to medical care, dedication, and grit from specialists, nurses, owners, and patients can overcome substantial obstacles. No doubt, Twix is thankful to the many people that have care for him over the course of his recovery, including. his owner Mel B, his regular vet Dr. Erica D, and the SASH team (Anaesthetists, Surgeons, Surgery Nurses, Physiotherapists, Rehabilitation Therapists, and Client Services).

Meet Luna the Rottweiler Luna's first visit to SASH was for an emergency grass seed removal from her eye, she was in and out in no time. Her second visit wasn’t so simple. Luna presented to SASH Alexandria for increased lameness in her back leg. After assessment, Luna’s parents received the news that she needed major hip replacement surgery. Luckily for Luna, SASH Alexandria has Professor Kenneth Johnson on their surgery team. Prof Ken (aka the godfather of vet orthopaedics) was the first surgeon in Sydney to perform total hip replacement surgeries in dogs suffering from hip dysplasia, a painful genetic malformation of the hip joint. In addition to his experience with hips, he was the first to introduce the Slocum TPLO surgery for cruciate rupture to Australia, and in collaboration with AO Vet, he introduced numerous pioneering techniques for cruciate repairs. Last month, Luna came in for her post-op checkup, and she’s as happy as a daisy! Her owner commented “She’s very much gone back to her usual self and is doing lots of catch up with the park, couch, and dinner table”. Luna has found freedom and is now able to enjoy her life without pain. Luna is a reminder that, just like human patients, modern medicine can significantly improve a pet’s quality of life. If you've noticed a change in the way your pet walks, please consider consulting with your vet for a professional assessment.
Not all cats dislike water! Meet Milo, a gorgeous Burmese who attends hydrotherapy at SASH North Ryde after being hit by a car earlier this year. Hydrotherapy allows pets with spinal injuries to perform low impact exercise allowing safe, controlled weight bearing on weak and/or painful limbs.
Recently the team at SASH provided veterinary care to a cat. Eagle-eyed fans may be noticing something unusual about this particular feline. Perhaps being slightly larger than the average cat. Judah the 5-year-old African lion, boasting a weight of 187 kg, presented to SASH Western Sydney. He was accompanied and under the care of his regular veterinarian Dr Lachlan Cameron (from Zoo Veterinary Services), for a health screen and eye exam. A cat this big needed an equally large and highly specialised team. Dr Andrew Adezio, Radiologist & big cat expert carried out ultrasound and CT with support from Annie Pham, Radiographer. Dr Negar Hamzianpour, Ophthalmologist, Dr James Bryan, Ophthalmology Resident, and Natasha Ritchard, Ophthalmology Nurse conducted the eye exam. Anaesthesia was provided Dr Chris Sun, Anaesthetist and Samantha Wright, Surgery Nurse. Thank you to Shoalhaven Zoo for entrusting us with the biggest cat the hospital has had the pleasure of seeing.
Pet parents, this is your friendly reminder: tick season is in full swing! 🌿 These pesky parasites thrive in bushy areas and can cause tick paralysis, a life-threatening condition for your furry friends. Keep your pets safe this summer: 🐕 Check after a walk: If your pet has been outdoors, run your fingers through their coat, especially around the head, ears, and paws once they're back 🛡️ Use prevention products: Chat with your vet to find the best tick prevention for your pet 🐜 Found a tick? Use a tick remover or tweezers to carefully detach it by the head. Never burn, squeeze, or use oils on the tick! 🚨 Know the signs: If your pet shows incoordination, weakness, trouble breathing, or a change in bark/meow, contact your vet ASAP!
