Great news out of WA today, with WA becoming the first jurisdiction to adopt the nationally agreed Poultry Standards and Guidelines. This paves the way for a number of important animal welfare improvements for poultry, including a phase out of barren battery cages for layer hens. A phase out battery cages can’t come soon enough. These small, barren wire cages, where each hen lives her entire life in a space no larger than an A4 sheet of paper, represent one of the most serious animal welfare issues in Australia today. We commend the Cook Government for taking this important step in improving animal welfare for WA’s layer hens. And on the same day that all state and territory Agriculture Ministers have endorsed a National Statement for Animal Welfare, it's a timely reminder that national consistency in animal welfare regulation is more important than ever - which is why we continue to work with other state and territory governments to see the end of battery cages as soon as possible.
This year and every year at RSPCA Approved, we are dedicated to improving the quality of life for farmed animals. We do this by working closely with producers to make a positive impact, by improving housing, handling and husbandry that better meet the animals' physical and behavioural needs. Every step forward helps build a better future for animals now, and into the future.
By becoming an RSPCA Guardian Angel this Christmas, your compassion will help provide protection to animals in need this Christmas. Pigs are highly social animals, who love to forage and explore their environment and will form strong bonds with one another. Being able to socialise is important for pigs, so housing them in groups with enrichment is a key factor in providing a better quality of life for these remarkable animals. #RSPCAApproved
"Inflicting electric shock on a horse can cause significant pain" A recent paper published in the UNSW Law Journal takes a look at the use of electric prodders on rodeo horses in Australia, with RSPCA Australia's Dr Di Evans as a co-author on the piece. The paper argues that electric prodders should be made illegal Australia-wide, a recommendation backed by comprehensive legal analysis of the legislation and regulations around the use of electric devices on bucking horses in rodeos. The decision to end live sheep export trade in Australia is one that's not just backed by science and evidence, but it's also supported by the majority of Australians. Over 70% of West Australians support the Federal Government's policy to phase out live sheep export. And close to 80% of Aussies support the phasing out of live sheep export if farmers are provided assistance. The Australian government has allocated $139 million to support the transition away from the trade. The 2023 parliamentary petition calling for a legislated end date was also one of the largest parliamentary e-petitions in Australia's history, showing that Australians want a better future for our sheep. And up until live sheep export is phased out on 1 May 2028, we all must continue to advocate for a better future for our sheep. For more information and links to references and resources, visit rspca.org.au/key-issues/live-sheep-export/ #betterthanliveexport #endlivesheepexport #livesheepexport #rspca #sheep

The decision to end live sheep export in Australia is one that's backed by decades of evidence of sheep suffering, showing serious animal welfare issues that have not been fixed, and can not be fixed. See the timeline of tragedy here: https://timeline.rspca.org.au/ More recently, between 2018 and 2023, Independent Observers gathered data on board 53 live sheep export ships, which carried a total of 2.5 million sheep between them. On 80 per cent of these voyages, sheep were reported as starving on board; and at least 60 per cent of the voyages reported sheep suffering from heat stress. Learn more here: https://rspca.au/66efOy From now until the legislated end date for live sheep export on 1 May 2028, and beyond, we must keep advocating for a better future for sheep. Today we’d like to celebrate the hard work and dedication of Producers who focus on the welfare of their animals, by rearing them to the robust RSPCA Approved Standards. By achieving RSPCA Approved certification, Producers demonstrate they’re prioritising the behavioural and physical needs of the animals. RSPCA Approved means: 🐔 Lower stocking densities for meat chickens to stretch their wings 🥚 Secluded nesting boxes for layer hens to lay their eggs 🐖 Quality nesting materials, for sows to raise their piglets in a comfortable environment 🦃 Interesting objects for the curious minds of turkeys 🐄 Group housing for highly social dairy calves The RSPCA Approved mission for a future of higher-welfare farming can only be achieved by working with producers to improve living conditions and ensure animals are free to express natural behaviors. Every step forward helps build a better future for farm animals. #rspcaapproved #rspca #agday #farming
