It was a long weekend in the sugarhouse!🔥 The 50 degree temps produced an incredible sap run and some seriously delicious dark syrup that we can’t wait to share with you! Did you know that we fill our firebox every 5-7 minutes while sugaring? When the nights are cold, And the late winter days are just beginning to warm, maple sap begins to flow through the Laurel & Ash Farm sugarbush. During this small window every winter, we harvest only our sweetest sap to create the most delicious and delightful maple syrup.🍁 This year we are trying something new… a check valve spout developed by Dr. Timothy Perkins, Director of the University of Vermont’s Proctor Maple Research Center. We’ve been wanting to try these spouts for a few seasons, and after listening to Dr. Perkins speak about the potential benefits of these spouts on the Cornell Maple Program’s, ‘Sweet Talk’ podcast, we decided this was the year! By introducing a check valve system at the tap hole, we can effectively eliminate the backflow of sap from the tubing system, increasing sap production in two ways: •Sap that leaves the hole during short sap runs cannot be pulled back by the tree as it freezes. •Contaminated sap from the tubing system cannot be pulled back into trees during the natural freezing and thawing cycles, or when vacuum pumps are shut off.
