Thank you @focusfeatures for the premiere of @conclavethefilm . After the film I decided to do a bit of research on the history of the church and this is what I found. The Conclave: A Definition A conclave is defined as a private meeting or secret assembly, particularly one involving the Roman Catholic cardinals who are secluded while choosing a new pope. The term originates from the Latin word conclavis, meaning "lockable room," reflecting the closed nature of these gatherings where discussions are kept confidential. The Western Schism Take, for instance, the Western Schism (1378-1417), a tumultuous period when rival popes claimed authority, leading to a fracture within the Church. This schism arose from a conclave that elected Pope Urban VI, whose aggressive reforms alienated many cardinals. In response, a faction of cardinals convened another conclave and elected Pope Clement VII, resulting in a chaotic situation where multiple popes vied for legitimacy. The power struggles and political alliances formed during this time reveal how the conclave, intended to be a spiritual gathering, devolved into a battleground of ambition and betrayal. The Borgia Influence The infamous Borgia family, particularly Pope Alexander VI, further illustrates the corruption that can seep into the conclave process. Elected in 1492, Alexander VI was notorious for his blatant nepotism and manipulation of the papal office. His conclave was not merely a religious assembly but a stage for his family's ambitions, as he sought to consolidate power and wealth. The Borgia legacy serves as a chilling reminder of how the sacred can be tainted by the profane. The Abuse Crisis In more contemporary times, the conclave has faced scrutiny in light of the clergy sexual abuse crisis. The revelations of widespread abuse and subsequent cover-ups by Church leaders have cast a long shadow over the institution.
