Solo Backpacking & Wild Camping 🌄 Just you and your tent!🙍🏼‍♂️⛺️ I’m a social person and most of my adventures involve my mates or family. It took a while, but when I finally ventured out to the National Parks on my own, I found that I was actually quite happy in my own company. The experience was enhanced in a different way to adventuring with friends and family. I was alone, solo, with no one around for miles. Just me, myself and I in the wilderness. The calmness and sense of being was nothing like I’d experienced before. I felt connected to the National Park. I reset. My gear was all I had. All of a sudden, my gear had to look after me. No one to borrow from, no one to help me. It wasn’t nerve wrecking, it was exciting! Since my first solo adventure I’ve found myself itching to go out solo again and again. Solo backpacking cleanses your mind, your body and your soul. The physical and mental health benefits are significant. The mindset of a backpacker… 🎒 1) Forget the weight. Seriously, forget it! Get caught up in the adventure and the scenery but don’t give a thought to what you’re carrying. 2) Try to keep your backpack on. You’ll see me wearing backpacks with hip pockets, hydration reservoirs and I also add a chest rig too. The more on and off, the more you think and feel the weight. 3) Balance. The ups and downs are much more difficult carrying weight. Learn to second-guess the effects of wearing weight and you’ll be safe and injury-free. 4) Keep your mind on the goal. If you’re backpacking you’ve got a destination in mind. Keep your mind on it! 5) Create memories. You’ll forget the aches and pains but you’ll never forget the adventures. Keep that in mind. Also, sometimes overcoming the tough times makes it all the more memorable 🙌 6) Comfort vs Weight. Multi-day hikes will mean comfort is reduced in order to save weight. Great day @motorcyclelive today! 🏍️ Lots of new bikes coming out so it was a good show to go to. Being a trackday rider in the past, I’m bias towards sportsbikes, but it was nice to sit on all the other styles of bikes too. For those who don’t know, I currently ride a Yamaha Tracer 9 GT after selling my Aprilia Tuono 1100 V4 Factory. The Tracer is definitely better for long distances and carrying gear. They smashed it! 👊 Super proud of my fitter-half Laura and her awesome teammate Sarah. These pocket rockets flew round the Hyrox, Manchester course 🏃‍♀️ 🚀 The atmosphere at the Manchester Convention Centre was electric ⚡️ It was impossible not to get caught up in the event with the tunes pumping 🎶 and the crowds cheering 📣 It looked like such a great event and it was nice to see people of all ages giving it a proper go 😅 Big shout out to @believept , Laura and Sarah’s PT, for getting them in tip-top shape, creating a specific training programme for them and filling them full of self-belief. To top it off, Ellie came and supported them too with lots of encouragement! Look after your 🥾 and they’ll look after you 💦 As you know, I look after all my hiking and camping gear. I always clean and dry my backpacking gear before storing it away, so it’s ready to go the next time I call upon it. For me, it’s really important I look after my footwear. There’s nothing worse than being 1k into your hike and your feet are soggy. From then on you risk discomfort and blisters. Here’s my top tips: 1) NikWax your footwear from new. It may discolour slightly, but who cares, they’re going to get dirty anyway! 2) Always clean your footwear after use. Do it as soon as possible as it’s much easier to clean them. 3) Re-proof your footwear once dry. 4) Enjoy dry, trouble-free hiking on your next adventure! I’ve used NikWax products for over a decade. Originally just for proofing clothing, but now I use their products for hiking gear and camping gear too.
