September 13th: The day I made American history. It still feels surreal… my work as a journalist is featured on the new exhibit, “De Última Hora: Latinas Report Breaking News,” at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, DC. ✨ Ever since I entered journalism, my mission was clear: tell Latino stories to a mainstream audience. Putting our cultura at the forefront of my reporting and storytelling wasn’t always easy, but it proved WORTH IT. I’ve been fortunate to share the stories of diverse communities for outlets like VICE, Bloomberg, HuffPost, and do so from around the world… Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Costa Rica, Perú, and my beloved Puerto Rico. I was born to do this — I feel it in my veins, and when some said it’d be difficult to carve a path for myself in a cutthroat industry, I dared to try. 🇵🇷 That tenacity led this jíbara from la isla to be highlighted as part of “the future of journalism” for my contributions as a multimedia / multiplatform journalist, alongside pioneers like Maria Elena Salinas and Ilia Calderón, women whom I’ve admired since my college days in NYC. To the young aspiring journalists: There’s no one way to become a journalist. A few years ago, social media wasn’t even taken seriously by traditional media, but look where it’s landed me in 2023! No matter where you come from, you can achieve that dream — regardless of how unattainable it may seem.
