Today’s #discember prompt is #disneydogs so I created “Max” from The Little Mermaid but in my theme for #disember2024 : “How would #MaryBlair design this character”. Here’s why it’s Max: I was an intern at Disney during the making of #LittleMermaid. Interns were allowed to go to dailies screenings as well as WIP screenings of the entire film. So, I saw a lot of the rough pencil tests from Mermaid. Whenever a Max shot would come on the screen, it would steal the show! I don’t think I ever told @russ.edmonds this, but his #animation of animals at Disney was some of the best parts of many of the 90s films! Thank you Russ, from one #animator to another!

In this episode, Tom and Tony interview a true “artist’s artist”, @todpolson , master animation designer and director. We discuss Tod’s amazing book about Maurice Noble and what he learned from Chuck Jones’s main layout artist at Warner Brothers Studios. We then dive into discussing his newest short film, “The 21” a powerful and stylized film that tells the true story of martyred men of faith in 2015. This is an amazing, Oscar-worthy short!

This is a piece of Disney history that I’m considering selling, but I thought many of you would appreciate. It was made at the Richard Williams studio during the production of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” (signed on the bottom 1987). It was on display in that studio (and taken out for publicity photos like the one shown here with Richard, Robert Zemekis (director), Don Hahn, and others.). It was then put into the Disney Florida animation studio from opening day May 1989, and sat in a corner for many years often times covered in rubber bands from animator rubber band wars. When I left Disney in 2000, it was given to me (I did ask) by someone in operations. I’ve been lugging it around for 30 years. I had it sitting in a corner in our animation class at Lipscomb University for many years also. It still has animator coffee on it from years of people talking in front of it.
