SAVE THIS POST! When Montessorians say, give baby a choice, this is what it looks like. Giving a choice between two toys (or clothing, books etc) is a wonderful way of communicating our trust in our infant’s competence. And as the child learns to make choices, whether by looking at the chosen item, or reaching for it, their confidence in themselves and their environment grow. Not only that, but the two-way bond between the adult and the baby is strengthened by this simple offering of a choice. It takes maybe 30 seconds for the adult to hold up two options and wait for baby to choose. It sets both on a lifelong path of mutual respect and connection. I created a small space for our plant tools/ supplies 🌱 and built in a weekly rhythm of plant care so my child would become familiar doing it with me week after week. {Read caption to learn WHY it works} parents, you may instinctively frame requests to the child in the negative/ tell them what NOT to do: “Don’t touch that!” “Don’t put in your mouth!” Hearing a negative can be confusing to the child. They might not hear the “don’t” and only hear the end of it, such as “touch that!” The more overused the “don’t” is, the harder it is to get them to listen.
