Before we were brought into this world, we took a covenant with Allah. In 2011, at the start of the Syrian revolution, I quickly became involved in leading protests locally in Chicago, as well as nationally, against the injustice that the Syrian people had been facing for over 50 years. Ironically, I was born in Syria but was never allowed to visit. It was early 2011, and I was granted the green light to visit Syria. Suddenly, protests broke out in Syria, and my parents made it clear I couldn’t go. With a ticket to Syria already purchased, we mutually settled on that traveling to Turkey for a three-week intensive would be the best option at the time. From that moment, I was catapulted into the next 13 years of learning and community work. Returning from that trip, I was excited to learn and implement. God placed me in one-on-one classes with the likes of Shaykh Mohammed Amin Kholwadia and allowed me to work in the heart of Ta’leef. Thirteen years of working with Ta’leef all started because of the Syrian revolution. This past Saturday, I was honored to be the keynote speaker for the Bay Area’s Year-End Event. The irony of that moment, and what made it even more special, was that on the same day, the Free Syrian Army took hold of Damascus and most of Syria. I stood there in awe of God’s plan.Thirteen long years ago, I was in the streets of Chicago, praying for a free Syria, and now I was standing behind the podium, shocked to utter such words. God’s ultimate golden thread and plan had been revealed, and it couldn’t have been written any better. Before Muhammad ﷺ was known to his people as the Messenger of God, he was al-Amin, the Trustworthy. He was the person others would trust to safeguard their valuables while they traveled. The elders of the Quraysh trusted him, as a young man, to resolve their dispute over who would return the Black Stone to its place in the Kaba. Khadijah, may God be pleased with her, hired him as a merchant to trade on her behalf in Syria due to his reputation as an honest and skillful businessman--and eventually grew to love him for his virtue. The Prophet’s reputation was built upon his character, and his character came before his message. After hearing their acknowledgement that he was truthful, he said to them, “Then know that I am a warner of a severe punishment ahead.” Delivering the message of Islam in a package of trust and love is a sunnah that we can follow as well. In fact, it is a sunnah that is essential to the future of Islam in the West. During the Night of Ascension, when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ met Allah, Allah greeted him with, “Peace be upon you and you alone, O Prophet of God.” The Prophet ﷺ responded, “Peace be upon us,” extending that peace to his entire Ummah. This sacred exchange is witnessed every time we pray and recite the Attahiyat. We are invited into the presence of Allah with each prayer, standing before our Creator in direct connection. If we are aware of the weight of this reality, if we truly understand that we are in conversation with the Divine, it can completely transform how we approach prayer. It shifts our hearts and minds from distraction to focus, from routine to reverence, knowing that we stand before the One who created us and sustains us. True humility isn’t about diminishing ourselves when we receive praise. Instead, it’s about recognizing that all good is from Allah. When someone compliments you, don’t say “it’s nothing” or downplay your blessings. Rather, direct the focus to the Bestower of blessings—Allah. Everything praiseworthy in us is a reflection of His grace. As Ibn Ata’illah teaches us, we are merely a canvas upon which God’s glory is written. Let’s remind ourselves that every blessing is a gift from Him, and it is to Him that all gratitude is due. It is this purity that serves as the compass for true guidance, untouched by the biases and distractions that the intellect can sometimes create. When the heart is clouded by the noise of the world or the overactivity of the mind, its ability to perceive truth diminishes. The Prophet ﷺ didn’t ask us to rely solely on our intellect, even though it is a gift from Allah, nor did he disregard the importance of reason. Instead, he emphasized consulting the heart—a reminder that our hearts, when aligned with Allah, hold unparalleled clarity.
