The Prophet ﷺ noted that most people fail to benefit from two blessings: health and free time. Both are blessings because they symbolize a unique synthesis: the absence of externals that encumber us; the physical strength to act. Winter break, if we are healthy, brings these together in a profound way. Here are things you can do during your break to improve your Islam: 1. Repent for past mistakes. Repentance is more than accountability: a charge and admittance of guilt. When done right, repentance is an emancipating instrument that takes us from guilt to security. 2. Establish the obligations. From acts of worship to engagement with others, use this time to take inventory of your commitments to devotion. Shore up the holes by focusing on the obligations. 3. Increase in voluntary good. It is here that a person becomes near Allah, “My devotees continue to do extra good until I love them.” The obligations are an affirmation of servitude; the nawafil are the gardens of Allah’s love. Set aside some time these days to pray in the night, fast and do good. 4. Set a learning goal. Try to memorize Sura al-Mulk, for example, or any other surah or hadith that is important you, journaling how they impact you and their meanings. Allah bless us with health and free time, granting us the guidance to use them correctly.

The Prophet ﷺ said, “People are like metals,” a statement that offers profound insight into the patience required for Prophetic education. Individually, we must take the time to “dig” into ourselves, addressing shortcomings, past traumas, and negative triggers, as well as reflecting on our successes—what caused them and how we maintained them. To find our gold, we must plow the soil and embrace the process of getting dirty. Ibn Ata’illah advises, “Bury yourself in a deep earth; what is not buried will not grow or ripen.” True growth requires depth, effort, and the humility to undergo transformation. In community work, the Prophetic approach calls us to move beyond the reflex of canceling others. Islam does not declare people irredeemable for simple mistakes or mistakes done with an accepted excuse. While Islam upholds accountability, it also provides a path of penance and redemption—pragmatic and restorative. This, however, demands patience and a willingness to endure discomfort and for the sinner to be responsible and change. To get dirty. When we dig into ourselves, we learn the skills that may benefit others. What emerges is something extraordinary: a shared journey of growth that creates bonds of family and transformation. I once saw a lyric on a wall by Kendrick Lamar (I am not advocating this song): “Look inside of my soul, and you can find gold—and maybe get rich.” It reminded me that the wealth we seek lies within, waiting to be uncovered
