Appreciating the good books I read this year! 👛 What are your favourite reads from 2024? [ spoonful of pages , read more , 2024 favourites , best books , book covers , year end reflection , bookstagram ] #spoonfulofpages
Polish literature has been another highlight for me this year. From ‘The Books of Jacob’ to ‘Drive Your Plow Over The Bones of the Dead, I fell under the spell of Olga Tokarczuk. Read it for its oddness, thought-provoking choices, and an unusual protagonist. Finally, a murder mystery I enjoyed after a long time! Highlight of the year: Fangirling over Irish authors and Cillian Murphy 🤤 I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with The Bee Sting, Skippy Dies and The Hearts Invisible Furies. Rest will be read in the next few months!🤞🏽 [ spoonful of pages , irish novels , contemporary fiction , read good books , everything irish is good , bookgram ] #spoonfulofpages
November round-up 🍯 The end of the year sees me spending more time in bed watching comfy shows, which means fewer books are being read. 🧃Skippy Dies was my highlight of the month! 🛴Frankenstein and Cleopatra was full of tension and complications in a relationship. 🚶🏾♀️Amy Tan’s Joy Luck Club didn’t work for me, which was surprising since I have previously enjoyed her books. Do you have any favourites from this month? [ spoonful of pages , wrap up , what I read , irish books , contemporary fiction , historical novels , read more books , bookgram ] #spoonfulofpages
Bookstagram positives 🫖 🛝 Since I began posting here during lockdown, some of my friends who have stuck by have made a significant difference to my reading and posting. 🛝 I’ve been influenced to read outside my comfort zone and introduced to some amazing authors. 🛝 There is a sense of celebration in this community for each other’s achievements. 🛝 I appreciate honest and healthy bookish interactions. 🛝 When I’m in a reading slump, I open this page and am instantly inspired to pick up a book. 🛝 Getting to meet my online friends in person is the most special one. 🛝 It’s fun for me to pass along books to fellow nerds 🛝 Although we might get lost in the web of algorithms, some conversations are genuine. 🛝 People’s reading preferences vary, and I believe that is respected. Let’s hear what makes this community special to you 🫵🏽 [spoonful of pages , bookish friends , bookstagram community , bookgram , book nerds , reading is cool ] #spoonfulofpages
After flipping the last page, I noticed the title and cover - everything made sense in retrospect! All of us are shaped by the decisions and behaviors of our parents. From generation to generation, burdens, traumas, and good learnings are passed down. The book evoked so many sentiments - some parts made my stomach turn, some made me cry, and some gave me peace. Depression. Do we go through it without realising it? It is possible that we all have flaws, and that we may be selfish and ignore other people’s struggles. Hello Beautiful is an emotionally difficult read in my opinion, Ann Napolitano’s characters are so nuanced and intricate that I felt a personal connection to them all. One needs to be thick-skinned to get through it, however it’s an appreciative journey. One of the most memorable I’ve read this year! For those who are unfamiliar with Sri Lanka’s war and the Tamil Tigers, Brotherless Night is the ideal introduction. V. V. Ganeshananthan makes a passionate attempt to make you understand history through her writing. It’s a moving story from Sashi’s (our protagonist) perspective. Whether one makes the right or wrong decision to protect one’s family during war is a matter that is left to the reader’s interpretation. Historical fiction can sometimes be complex, lengthy, and too informative, but this book strikes the right balance and might be of interest to readers who prefer slimmer novels! Often, bookworms need an excuse or occasion to buy new books. For me, it was Bhai Dooj (thanks to my brother)🤝🏽 I’m intrigued by 𝗞𝗮𝗹𝗮, a suspenseful debut novel, especially since my obsession with Irish authors continues to grow! A multigenerational story, 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 is Tommy Orange’s debut, and I’ve heard it’s similar to Homegoing (multiple POVs), which I enjoyed. Have you read any? What are your suggestions for good historical fiction? Several months ago, I tried reading The Joy Luck Club, but I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to continue - so here’s another attempt at Amy Tan. My first encounter with her work was The Kitchen God’s Wife, which I liked quite a bit.
