For those who only know of Elroy Cheo (@elroxcheo) through years-old entertainment news showing him about town with his famous exes, it might be somewhat surprising to learn that he is actually quite the introvert. “I have had to force myself to be out there because of work,” he says with a wry smile. “In the past, I wouldn’t have been able to talk to you like this.” At 12, he was diagnosed with a serious illness. During this time, there were periods where he was confined to bed for months on end. With a grin, he recalls, “I had to fill up my time, right? So I would play games a lot; I think I’m a nerd. I taught myself HTML, and created my own website where I amalgamated utility tools that would help users better connect to the internet.” Years later, in 2016, one of his uncles, a software developer, introduced him to the Web3 space, by getting him to work on a music copyright blockchain project. Cheo was then working in his dad’s company, which specialises in commodities, but “my uncle knew that I was tech-savvy and that my interests lay elsewhere”. While the project did not quite take off, it ignited Cheo’s interest in the Web3 realm and eventually set the stage for @arcthecommunity. “Our collective is capped at 888 members, who are mostly active builders and investors in both the Web3 and the Web2 spaces. The idea of starting @arcthecommunity came about years ago, pre-pandemic, while Elroy Cheo (@elroxcheo), and Kiat Lim (@kkiatlim) were having drinks with a few friends. At one point, talk turned to the lack of “purposeful online groups” that they could be part of. Sure, there were groups such as YPO – the Young Presidents’ Organization – a global network of leaders who have notched up exceptional achievements at a young age. But it was not an online-based community. Instead, he took inspiration from another group of friends in China. “There were more than 20 of them, and they were part of a WeChat group. It was formed before Covid, more than eight years ago. They invested together, built together, and sometimes failed together. Earlier in May this year, we had the privilege to attend a special concert that honoured the 150th anniversary of Palais Garnier, one of Paris’ most opulent concert halls. This exclusive event, Rolex Abassadors Concert, features some of the biggest opera and classical music stars including Juan Diego Flórez (@jdiego_florez), Sir Bryn Terfel (@bryn965), Rolando Villazón (@rolandovillazon) and Sonya Yoncheva (@sonyayoncheva) – as well as superstar pianist Yuja Wang (@yujawang.official).
