🦃🌲 when holidays converge…. Something I don’t particularly care for. I’m an absolutist in that sense. I like each holiday to be sacrosanct… Have a space all its own. This year, however, Thanksgiving comes late…sometimes life intervenes, and because of busy schedules and travel, Christmas often intrudes on my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving. When holidays overlap, I think of them as seasonal infractions. Pumpkins out with Christmas lights, trees up in the same room as the Thanksgiving spread. But then, that’s just me. Questions: should I or shouldn’t I go ahead and pull out my annuals even though they are still looking beautiful. Eventually, they’re going to have to go to make way for tulips and pansies and other spring garden participants. Sadly, my Lantana won’t over winter, and even if it did, it would be crowded out by what comes up next spring. I do save some of it and keep it in a frost free environment. Is your own pumpkin patch, pumpkin display, getting smaller and more diminished? Haunted by abnormally, high temperatures and marauding squirrels? What to do what to do!? Here’s a garden hack for you. If you’re doing some container, gardening this fall, fill up those large pots with pumpkin remnants and their rotting flesh! This saves money on potting soil, will break down and nourish your plants overtime, and they are not ending up in the landfill. If the soil line begins to drop, simply add a layer of refreshing compost on top. 🌳 I had no idea when I bought these inexpensive Eugenia topiaries years ago that they would play such an important role in the front garden. To me anyway. And when they have to go away - undercover in a greenhouse when frost is on the horizon - I truly, truly miss them. I miss their whimsy and personality and companionship.
