The year was 1972. Nixon was in the White House, bell-bottoms swayed to songs by Carole King, shag haircuts were the rage and my love for Blue Calico was as fierce as the heat of those Bakersfield summers. Burleigh’s Blue Calico—timeless, enchanting, maddeningly out of reach. The dishes I coveted sat gleaming behind shop windows, their deep royal florals whispering of tea poured properly, of scones on rainy afternoons, of a life far more refined than my modest budget allowed. But where there is longing, there is ingenuity. Instead, I found another way. Kettle Cloth—$2.77 a yard. No, not porcelain, but still beautiful. I sewed and made do. And somehow, that fabric carried a bit of the same charm, the same spirit as the dishes I dreamed of. Fast forward to today, and thanks to @vivo.veronika those old dreams have come full circle. I love capturing the winter sunlight this time of year as it drifts low across the back of the house, almost as if it’s peeking through the windows, curious to see what’s on my tables. As I was designing this tablescape I felt like it needed a splash of yellow and just like that golden winter light, I think the golden hues adds a touch of warmth to the cooler tones.
