The Wuppertal Schwebebahn, the world’s oldest electric elevated railway with hanging cars, was designed by Eugen Langen and opened in 1901. Originally intended for Berlin, it found its home in the industrial town of Wuppertal, Germany. Stretching 13.3 kilometers along the Wupper River and suspended up to 12 meters high, the Schwebebahn glides silently above the city, offering passengers a unique perspective of Wuppertal. ‘Reflecting Pools’ by Mel Chin The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library showcases conceptual art to inspire reflection. Mel Chin’s piece ‘Reflecting Pools’, comments on water usage and industrial erosion. Each restroom features one of three sculpturally eroded sinks, with the erosion progressing from the 8th to the 3rd floor.
