Designed by the renowned architect Piero Portaluppi between 1932 and 1934, Villa Del Dosso in Somma Lombardo (Varese) is widely regarded as one of his most significant works. Nestled within the Parco del Ticino—a protected environmental oasis designated as a Site of Community Importance (SIC) since 2008—the villa sits on a sprawling 17-hectare estate where wild deer and bucks roam freely, coexisting harmoniously with humans. Listed in the Register of the Portaluppi Foundation, the villa is part of an extensive architectural complex that includes a hunting lodge, a porter’s lodge with stables, a consecrated chapel, and several smaller structures, all crafted by Portaluppi. One of Bologna’s iconic porticoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a defining feature of the city, with over 60 kilometers of arches. Dating back to the Middle Ages, they were built to expand upper floors while providing public shelter. By the 13th century, porticoes became mandatory for new buildings. The Portico di San Luca is the longest in the world, stretching 3.8 km with 666 arches, leading to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca. The widest portico is at the Basilica of Santa Maria dei Servi, and the tallest is in Via Altabella at 10 meters high. Initially made of wood, most were rebuilt in stone during the Renaissance.
