Grasses in our top garden take on their winter appearance. The lovely golden colour in the centre of the photo is Hakonechloa macra. #garden #gardening #gardener #gardens #gardendesign #englishcountrygarden #gardenphotography #beautifulgardens #countrygardens

Beautiful picture of our pond by @clivenichols. The large plant is Japanese knot weed planted by our predecessors. In our case this isn’t a troublesome plant, it isn’t always. As well as this lovely autumn colour it flowers well in the summer and in the winter has architectural stems like bamboo. The lovely fern is Osmanda regalis - the Royal Fern. The conifer in the picture bizarrely self seeded itself into an old tree stump. It has never been watered or looked after and has survived and grown through several prolonged drought periods. It looks all wrong to me but I haven’t had the heart to cut it down. #garden #gardening #gardener #gardens #gardendesign #englishcountrygarden #gardenphotography #beautifulgardens #countrygardens #clivenichols

Friday morning view from the top of our dive: mist, sun breaking through on distant hills and moon still in the sky. #garden #gardening #gardener #gardens #gardendesign #englishcountrygarden #gardenphotography #beautifulgardens #countrygardens

Acer rubrum October Glory. OK, so I post pretty much the same picture every year, but the trees are growing really well so look more spectacular every year. #garden #gardening #gardener #gardens #gardendesign #englishcountrygarden #gardenphotography #beautifulgardens #countrygardens

Shown is the magnificent 300 year old beech tree in front of our house 4 years ago before its first severe prune, at around 35 metres high. The second picture shows its fundamental problem: the base of the trunk is nearly 2 metres across but substantially hollow with rot spreading up the trunk. It leans towards our house and had it fallen would have gone straight through the roof. 4 years ago it was reduced in height to about 25 metres and recovered remarkably well. The third picture shows it last autumn. Recently a large bough crashed down and was shown to be rotten. So its been reduced substantially again as shown in the last picture, now about 18 metres tall. So if it does come down of its own volition it is now much less of a risk, and potentially like its last reduction will green up again next year. #garden #gardening #gardener #gardens #gardendesign #englishcountrygarden #gardenphotography #beautifulgardens #countrygardens
