Before and after... Design 2023 - Result 2024 I'm really thrilled and proud to show these pics from whole gardenprocess. July 2023..these clients asked me to make a very special design for their garden. As you see the soil was really horribly dry and poor at pic 1. I made this design, partial shown design at pic 2, to create a natural atmosphere with colourful plants. Many huge flowerbeds in combination with a prairie - seedmix. We've started to improve the soil with compost and to keep the maintenance low I've chosen for a layer of 8cm vulcanic gravel on top of the soil in these flowerbeds. Now weeds will be less and watering will be low in future. Thousands and thousands of bulbs and perennials were planted in September 2023...and now exactely one year later my clients have a spectacular colourful perennialgarden. They're happy and I'm proud. MY FIRST BOOK!! So happy and proud...I can do the happy dance whole day...FINALLY. In September 2022 the Dutch bookpublisher TERRA asked me to write a gardenbook for them. More specific about the "DUTCH WAVE" style, my colorful combinations, about how to create a natural garden, where to buy plants, how to get the "WOW" effect, how to work with grasses, bulbs and long flowering perennials and so on, and so on. I mentioned and described my favourites...and of course ALL PICS MADE BY MYSELF. Writing a book was a dream since I had the age of 20. Now my dream has come thrue. My very first book is written in my own DUTCH language...and many of you already asked me if there would be an Englisch version available... who knows, perhaps in future an Englisch publisher will translate it...you never know. Next week my book will be available in many many bookstores in The Netherlands and Belgium. This will be the perfect birthday gift, or for Christmass, or as present for your parents, neighbors, kids....or just for fun to read at your holiday. Typical Dutch Wave.. Like a copy of nature. It get more and more famous year by year and which we call the "Dutch Wave" style. The Dutch Wave is represented by plants with a very natural look. Like they're coming straight from nature. Although the typical style slowly got its new ideas about colour, I'll show here a video with a real natural approach. A bit how Dutch Wave has started. The combination of Cephalaria gigantea, Sanguisorba 'Tall Raspberry' and Veronicastrum 'Lavendelturm' at the background. Have you ever seen this?? Meet the Phlox family.. I've planted Phlox 'Morgengrauen' three years ago and see what happened. The amethyst purple parents have made some cute babies. In white, pink and purple. Can you imagine I've started with 5 plants...which resulted now in more than 100 new ones...and they do combine soo lovely together. -Design July 2023 -Planted in 2023-24 Last couple of days I shared some pics about my gravelplantings. We did the same at this garden last year. With help of the local gardener we turned up the poor soil until at least 80cm depth. This to improve the drainage. We improved it aswell with a layer of compost, 5 cm, and covered whole soil with 8 cm vulcanic gravel. This gravel, 2-8 mm, will protect the top of the soil against weeds. This will save more then 70% of self sowing weeds in the first couple of years. The gravel protect the gardensoil at dry periods aswell. This will save more then 80% water. Now we don't need to water that much anymore. After some years, when plants are fullgrown, weeds have less chance to thrive. Here we are; a low maintenance garden with the maximum level of joy. We all have our own favourite plantcombinations, and this pic shows one of mine.. In spring, when the first perennials are blooming, this wonderful combo get all attention. Aquilegia 'Black Barlow' and Lupinus 'My Castle' Both selfseeders, and they feel quite comfortable here at our gravel. Many offspring and I accually even need to remove some of them now. However, a wonderful combo for us and for some early pollinators... They're moving on.. Quite challenging to search for the right spot and circumstances to keep this yellow beauty where she is. Ratibida pinnata and Vernonia crinita. I've planted this yellow Ratibida at my traffic circle in a top layer of vulcanic gravel. This gravel works as a baby-boom-room for her. I originally started with ten plants and now they multiplied into a few hundred. All thanks to the gravel. I've tried to plant her in my own garden at a mix of clay and sand, but this didn't go well unfortunately. Even at different spots it didn't provide the right conditions...in opposit to the gravel. They defenitely like an open structure planting without to much competition of neighbours. Something to keep in mind. However, this combination at my trafficcircle is gorgeous.
