In 1839, Robert Cornelius, an amateur chemist and photography enthusiast, captured what is widely regarded as the first photographic self-portrait, or “selfie.” Using a daguerreotype process, Cornelius positioned himself in front of his homemade camera in his family’s lamp store in Philadelphia. In 1955, 14-year-old Peter Mangone, a Bronx native, was an avid admirer of Marilyn Monroe. Skipping school, he frequented the Gladstone Hotel on Manhattan’s East 52nd Street, where Monroe was staying. One day, he mustered the courage to approach her, and she invited him to join her shopping trip. Armed with an eight-millimeter Kodak camera, Mangone captured a five-and-a-half-minute silent film of Monroe strolling through Manhattan. This rare footage offers an intimate glimpse into the actress’s life beyond the silver screen. The film remained hidden until 2002, when Mangone’s brother discovered it among their father’s belongings.
