BEST OF EST | Architectural Weekenders In this Best of est round-up, we highlight six architectural weekenders across Victoria and New South Wales—coastal and inland retreats designed to immerse guests in nature and offer a break from everyday life. Located on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, Cape Schanck by Studio Goss melds into its surroundings, responding to the climate with interlocking, sheltered courtyards that act as spaces for refuge. The central courtyard, equipped with an outdoor kitchen and fireplace, shelters against southerly winds while framing north-facing views of the hills and treescape. The home was designed with sustainability in mind, with on-site water collection, solar power, and water treatment systems enhancing self-sufficiency. A pared-back material palette includes textured local bricks, poured terrazzo slabs, handmade clay tiles, and Australian blackbutt timber that will patina with age, all selected to ensure the home withstands the natural conditions of the locale. The exterior is kept minimal to ensure the home is immersed within the landscape, while glazed windows create a monolithic form and provide further protection. “The home comfortably balances both a quiet place to escape the city and a more social space to congregate, celebrate and embrace family life.” - Studio Goss founder David Goss Discover more Architectural Weekenders on estliving.com via the link in profile. Published on estliving.com Editor & Words @sophlew_says Design @studio_goss Photography @willem_dirk

ISSUE #54 OUT NOW | TIME TO PLAY: The Importance of Experimental Design This issue celebrates experimental design, showcasing how the homes and workspaces of creatives can serve as vital test labs for ideas. We see this through our cover story—architect Sophie Dries’ Paris apartment—and Italian designer Giampiero Tagliaferri’s Los Angeles atelier, set inside a Wes Jones-designed industrial home. Brazilian designer Andre Mellone describes his New York City home as a “lab where you test ideas out, and if things go wrong, you have no one to answer to but yourself.” CRITERIA and C. Gallery founder Rachael Fry’s restored Victorian villa in Melbourne is a canvas for her diverse style and pieces, just as designer Sebastian Zuchowicki’s hybrid living-working space blurs the lines between comfort and creativity, designed for constantly rotating furniture, objects, and art. We step inside one of Melbourne’s most significant high-rise apartment blocks by Yunken Freeman Brothers, Griffith & Simpson, where Kennedy Nolan has reconceived a late-modernist apartment’s interiors for art-collecting clients. Honouring a building’s past extends to a home’s historic well in Welsh + Major’s design of a new pavilion for a Sydney terrace. Our Bathroom Blueprint special feature gives voice to designers seeking new and interesting materials, shapes, and details in this space. We leave you with a definitive guide to bathroom design elements using our Product Library, recognising the joy of rethinking our spaces, regardless of their scale and purpose. – Sophie Lewis, editor Read more inside our latest issue #54 via the link in bio. Published on estliving.com Editor @sophlew_says Design & Visual Editor @jackseedsman Publisher @miffycoady A big thank you to our cover star @sophiedries_ Featuring @studiomellone @giampiero.tagliaferri @criteriacollection @cgallerycontemporary @sebastianzuchowicki @welshandmajor @kennedy_nolan @pocodesigns @mimdesignstudio @studiotate @ysg.studio @tamsinjohnson @omedezin @marionmailaender @roisinlaffertyofficial @arentpykestudio @crina_architecture Contributors @aleeshacallahan @christophecoenon @william.jess.laird

DESIGN DESTINATION | Hotel Drei Berge by Ramdane Touhami and Green River Project Perched at an altitude of 1,638 meters in the charming Alpine village of Mürren, Switzerland, Hotel Drei Berge is a refreshingly unique destination where design, nature, and craftsmanship merge seamlessly. Nestled on the edge of a cliff with breathtaking views of the Bernese Alps, this exceptional hotel offers an immersive experience unlike any other. When @ramdanetouhami opened Hotel Drei Berge, he left two rooms untouched for his friends @greenriverprojectllc and @bode to transform. The result was unexpected and exciting — using jockey silks and horse show ribbons to create a playful, vibrant design that stands apart from the hotel’s traditional aesthetic. Ramdane’s vision was clear: he didn’t want the hotel to be entirely his work but rather a collective effort that reflects his passion for collaboration. This is evident throughout the hotel, where bespoke elements like bedsheets inspired by American horse blankets, with show names embroidered on them, add a personal touch. Guests experience a full, immersive environment, from waking up in thoughtfully designed rooms to using custom-designed toiletries and accessories — from brushes to soaps — all crafted by Ramdane and his collaborators. Discover more design destinations on estliving.com via the link in profile. Destination @hoteldreiberge Design @ramdanetouhami @greenriverprojectllc @bode Photography @markc_oflaherty @calypsomahieu

DESIGN MIAMI 2024 | Martyn Thompson x 1882 Ltd. At this year’s Design Miami, Australian photographer, artist, and designer @martynthompsonstudio showcased his Ceramic Columns. Moulded and slip-cast with Emily Johnson of 1882 Ltd.'s master potters at the historic Wedgwood factory in Stoke-on-Trent, each piece is uniquely hand-decorated by Thompson. Guided purely by instinct, he applies muted, abstract patterns, elevating these ceramics into stunning works of art. The columns are formed from individual pots stacked together on a steel base, creating a sculptural, balanced form. As part of 1882 Ltd.'s daring Imaginarium exhibit, Thompson’s pieces sit alongside one-off and limited-edition works by other creative visionaries like Shona Heath, Robbie Williams, Max Lamb, Amy Jayne Hughes, Leah Jensen, Giles Deacon, and Bruce McLean. Each piece in this collection plays with form, pattern, colour, and texture, sparking curiosity and engaging the imagination. Discover more inspiring design on estliving.com via the link in bio. @1882ltd at @designmiami Design and photography by @martynthompsonstudio Styling by @lottielawtondesign & @___brianreyes

MODERN CURIOSITY | A late-modernist apartment by Kennedy Nolan "The clients had a discerning eye for art and furniture, and their collection consciously shaped the design methodology. Our role was to provide an exciting and elevating setting,” Kennedy says, likening their design to a Wunderkammer—a cabinet of curiosities. - Kennedy Nolan founding partner Patrick Kennedy Late modernism and its ‘refined, mannerist sub-genre’ led the studio to develop an interior based on axial planning that emphasised theatrical settings manifested through surface texture and tertiary hues. Designed in 1961, ‘Fairlie Flats’ by Yuncken Freeman Brothers, Griffiths & Simpson heralded a new decade of residential architecture in Melbourne. The nine-storey building was one of the city’s earliest examples of a high-rise block of apartments, claiming its exclusive place opposite the Royal Botanic Gardens. Read the entire story inside the latest digital issue of est magazine 'Time to Play' on estliving.com via the link in profile. Published in est magazine Editor & Words @sophlew_says Design & Architecture @kennedy_nolan Photography @derek_swalwell

DESIGN DESTINATION | Vipp Todos Santos Set along the Pacific Ocean amid the Mexican desert, Vipp Todos Santos fuses traditional architecture with a Scandinavian design approach to highlight the landscape from within. Situated in the coastal town of Todos Santos on Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, the guesthouse was built by Mexico City-based architect Pablo Pérez Palacios and his studio, PPAA. Marking Vipp’s tenth guesthouse—and its first outside Europe—the 350-square-property consists of a main house, two guesthouses, terraces, a circular rooftop pool and a shaded patio. The guesthouse was designed to honour the region’s biophilic design language, featuring dynamic volumes and exterior stairways that respond organically to the natural contours of the site. The architects applied local, traditional building techniques, designing the home with raw rammed earth walls that respond to the extremities of the climate by providing natural insulation. Blurring the lines between the architecture and its desert surroundings, large, open windows frame views of the coast and towering Cardones, or cacti. Discover Vipp Todos Santos at estliving.com. via the link in bio. Published on estliving.com Editor @sophlew_says Words Livia Toscano Architecture @perez_palacios_aa Interior Design @juliemoelsgaardinterior @sofievippnyc Photography Courtesy of Vipp
