How to Build a Sleeper Retaining Wall - Admittedly, I wish this process only took 24 seconds, but in reality, it's not that complicated. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how I installed my retaining wall: Step 1: Mark the Wall’s Location Start by marking where you want your wall to go using a string line. Step 2: Mark the Position for the Upright Posts Next, mark out where your upright posts will sit along the wall. Step 3: Dig the Holes Dig your post holes generously using a trusty post hole digger to speed things up. The deeper the better for a solid foundation. Step 4: Cut the Sleepers to the Desired Height Cut your sleepers to the desired height for the wall. They don’t need to be perfect at this point; you can trim them to the finished level later if needed. Step 5: Set the Posts Place your posts into the holes and secure them with postcrete or concrete. Make sure they are level vertically. Allow time for the concrete to set before moving on to the next step. Step 6: Lay the First Sleeper Place your first sleeper in between the posts and screw it in securely. Make sure it’s level across the entire section. Step 7: Lay the Remaining Sleepers With a level base to work from, lay the remaining sleepers. Try to overlap them like brickwork to create a stronger bond. Secure them with sleeper screws, ensuring they’re also screwed into the upright posts where they meet. Step 8: Add the Capping Sleeper Finish off with a capping sleeper, laid flat and secured with sleeper screws. Be sure to countersink the screws for a neat finish. Step 9: Line or Paint the Back of the Wall To reduce water ingress, line the back of the wall or paint it with bitumen. Step 10: Backfill Backfill the wall with gravel or hardcore at the bottom for drainage, then fill the rest with soil (depending on your goal for the wall). We completed this project over the weekend, and the wall is approximately 7 meters long. #gardening #landscaping #landscapegardening #walls #gardenproject #retainingwall
Here's why you should go big and bold with your pots! A large multi-stemmed tree underplanted with grasses and bulbs makes a real statement, simplistic and minimalist, but large and impactful. Placing it against a wall adds drama, with beautiful shadows throughout the day and stunning silhouette lighting at night. It’s an easy win, but looks incredible from a design perspective. #gardening #gardendesign #containerdisplays #treesforsmallgardens #gardenlife #gardenersworld
I'm not chasing watches, cars or money. My bliss is simple: family, nature, exercise and sipping a mighty fine coffee 💚☕️💪 That's where true joy lives. I do however chase coffee machines 😆 This is a thing of beauty from @quickmill_official #naturelover #gardening #coffee #slowliving #gardens
🚨 Big News! 🚨 We’re super excited to announce that The Theory Test Podcast is finally here! My brother Tom and I have been working on this for a while, and we’re now ready to share it with you. The goal of this podcast? To dive deep into some of the most talked-about self-improvement theories, give our honest takes, and have some real, open conversations about mental health. We’re all about exploring the best tools and techniques to build mental resilience, but also reminding everyone that it’s okay to be vulnerable and step outside your comfort zone. We’ve got a mix of full episodes where we break down theories and weekly check-ins where we share what we’re working on and how things are going. If that sounds like your thing, we’d love for you to join us on this journey of growth. Episode 1 is out now! Catch it as an audio podcast on Spotify or watch the video version on YouTube. Let’s do this! 🙌🎧🎥 Episode links in our bios and stories 👍 #selflove #selfimprovement #mentalhealthawareness #mentalresilience #betteryourself #mentalfitness #personalgrowth
I'm always asked how to maintain grasses, so here's a quick tip for how I maintain both deciduous and evergreen grasses all year round 👊 Happy gardening 💚 #gardening #gardenersworld #garden #grasses #evergreengrasses #lovegardening #gardenhack #gardenjobs #gardentips
A job for the weekend perhaps?? I absolutely love bare root season, and Roses are amongst my favourites to plant in abundance. I'm planting two varieties from @david_austin_roses - the gorgeous shrub rose 'Dannahue' and one of my favourite rambling roses 'Ghislaine de Feligonde' - here's a quick step by step in case you're not quite sure on how to plant them :) Happy weekend all! #gardening #gardenjobs #lovegardening #gardenersworld #barerootroses #roses #roseplanting
These are incredibly useful around the garden, other uses for coffees sacks like this are: Liners for hanging baskets Grow bags for potatoes and other root crops Membranes for paths Lining raised beds Composting Pest control Highly versatile, sustainable and zero cost. What's not to love about that? #gardening #gardentips #gardenhacks #gardenersworld #garden #sustainability #sustainablegardening
An alternative way to plant a hedge, something you may want to consider for the reasons mentioned in the video. This hedge took me no more than a couple of hours to plant, if I had dug a large trench this would have taken me significantly longer. As mentioned, if you don't have a curved path to follow like I did, you can create curves using garden hoses or rope, then simply follow the same process of marking your planting pockets using spray paint to guide you for digging. This is a great method for planting directly into grass or bare ground as you will minimise soil disturbance and it's a significantly more efficient use of time 👍 Your back will also be thankful too 👊 I got these bare root hedging plants from @crocus.co.uk they have a wide variety of bare root plants available on their website so why not take a look and use my code HJA15 for an even further reduction on price. Happy hedge planting! #hedge #plants #gardening #gardenersworld #plantingahedge #hedgeplanting #nodig
